The goal is implementation, not just delivering a report. - Get buy-in from the right people: Big changes need executive approval, so make sure your recommendations align with their business goals. Smaller tasks? Hand them off to junior stakeholders with clear, actionable steps. - Speak their language: Developers want technical details. Executives want to know the business impact. Our clients often complain that a bad Website Score at Sitechecker frustrates them and they work hard to correct all the errors. We communicate that this is our internal metric. It needs to be improved, but it's not the only metric you're working on. This is an assessment only of the technical SEO health of the website. You also have links, content, user experience, brand queries, and so on. When prioritizing work on your site, remember that: 1/ Not all technical errors can kill your traffic. 2/ Not all technical bug fixes can increase your traffic. 3/ A site with a bad Website Score may be successful in search results. However, this is often despite technical errors, and correcting errors can help it become even more successful. 4/ The significance of technical errors differs from the size of the sites. The larger the site, the more important the technical health of the site. 5/ The ROI for fixing technical errors differs from the size of the site, the industry, the cost of developer work, and the importance of SEO as an acquisition channel. 6/ The higher the competition, the more valuable every small advantage is. My 200+ SEO audit checklist is finally ready. Just a heads up, this checklist will be mostly SaaS-specific, but 75% applies to most industries (excluding ecom). It's also entirely free and ungated. Use Google Search Console (GSC) for Quick Sitemap Analysis: - Google Search Console is a great tool to quickly check your XML sitemaps. 2. Avoid Including 404s and Redirects in Sitemaps: - Make sure your sitemaps don't have pages that return a 404 error (page not found) or that redirect to another page. 3. How to Check in GSC: - If you've correctly submitted your sitemaps in GSC: 1. Go to the 'Pages' tab. 2. Select 'All submitted pages' from the drop-down menu (this shows pages included in your sitemaps). 3. Look at the index exclusion issues to see if there are any pages that are redirecting or don't exist. 4. Filter Specific Sitemaps: - You can use the drop-down menu to select specific sitemaps, like one that only has product pages, to narrow down your search. 5. Why This is Helpful: - This method gives you a quick overview of pages with issues in your sitemaps. - You can also use a crawler tool to get more detailed information about your sitemap. 6. Special Cases with Redirects: - Normally, redirecting pages shouldn't be in the sitemap. - However, in large website migrations, you might temporarily keep old sitemaps to help Google discover the redirects faster. So, Regularly check your sitemaps in GSC to ensure there are no unnecessary 404 or redirecting pages. This helps keep your sitemap clean and improves your site's SEO.
