“One doesn’t discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.” André Gide, French Novelist I love this quote at the start of William Bridges' brilliant chapter on ‘leading people through the Neutral Zone.’ * That moment in a change process where your anchor is up, you have moved away from the ‘old ways’, but you cannot yet see the future. The sea is often stormy. Confidence, motivation, energy and hope are low. Anxiety, anger, apathy, self-doubt and absenteeism are high. HOW TO FREE YOUR ORGANIZATION FROM MIND-FORGED MANACLES (1) In both our professional endeavors and personal lives, there exists a pervasive tendency to rest on past laurels. Many of us find confort in the achievements of the past, basking in the familiarity of what we have already accomplished. Still, this confort can quickly turn into a trap; a stagnant place where growth stagnates and potential remains unfulfilled. Professor Donald Mitchell in his book "The 2,000 Percent Solution" says that complacency is the root cause of mediocrity as it keeps people satisfied with far less with one's personal and organizational best. So, your company, your business and even you as an individual should not remain stalled in the complacency of past successes. This is the zone where growth stagnates, opportunities fade, and innovation takes a backseat. Although it is a confortable space, shielded from risks and challenges, it is a place where dreams stagnates and ambitions diminishes. While it is natural to celebrate past victories, resting on these laurels can lead to a dangerous cycle of stagnation. Successes of the past, no matter how grand, do not guarantee future triumphs. To trully thrive, we must break free from the allure of confort and venture into uncharted territories where new challenges and opportunites await. In other words, to achieve sustained success, one must embrace change and take courageous leaps forward. For, success does not emerge from staying in the safe zone or clinging to what has already been achieved. Be bold, embrace uncertainty and its inherent risks. Challenge yourself and your team to explore new ideas and approaches, even when they diverge from past successes. Think creatively and embrace change. As leaders, we are not immune to the emotional turbulence that accompanies these times—frustration, doubt, and the persistent pressure to steer our teams through turbulent waters. I just heard new term for me .. “business resilience”, which is key to thriving in today’s business world. In today’s fast-paced business environment, resilience is crucial at both the corporate and individual levels. While both are essential for long-term success, they each play distinct roles: Corporate Resilience: This involves an organization’s ability to withstand and adapt to market changes, disruptions, and unforeseen challenges. It’s about creating robust strategies, fostering a culture of innovation, and investing in technology, people and processes that ensure continuity and growth. Individual Resilience: On the personal level, resilience is the abilit to recover quickly from setbacks, adapt to change, and maintain a positive outlook. It’s about continuous learning, personal growth, and maintaining mental and emotional well being. Individual resilience empowers employees to navigate their professional challenges and contribute effectively to the organization’s success. From Corporate Comfort to Business Resilience: A Journey of Staying Focused Amid Challenges A few months ago, I made the boldest decision of my life—I left my job to start my own company. It wasn’t an easy choice, but deep down, I knew I needed to pursue something more meaningful, something I could call my own. Here’s what I’ve learned in this journey, and it’s been more valuable than any paycheck I’ve ever received: 1. Resilience is everything. The entrepreneurial path is not for the faint of heart. There are days I question everything—whether I made the right decision, whether my idea will ever take off. But I remind myself that every great business started with a struggle. Every business faces roadblocks. And those who keep going are the ones who succeed. 2. Focus on the process, not the outcome. Instead of worrying about the results that haven’t come yet, I’ve shifted my mindset to focus on the work. Every small task I complete, every connection I make, is a step forward. I’m learning to love the process, trusting that the results will follow in time. 3. Surround yourself with positivity. It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t go as planned, but I’ve realized how important it is to have the right people around you. People who believe in your vision, who uplift you when you feel like giving up. I’m grateful for the support system that keeps me grounded and motivated. I know success doesn’t happen overnight.
