🦆 What makes a Great Data Leader? 🦆 Data Engineers London recently had the pleasure of hearing from Nik Walker, Head of Data Engineering at Co-op, who delivered an absolutely quack-tastic talk on the power of human-centric leadership for data teams. Nik certainly brought his learned own views, but not just that; he guided us through a thoughtful exploration of how empathy, trust, and open communication are the real engines driving successful teams. And yes, there were a few quacks along the way to keep things lively! 🦆😅 The best part? Nik’s insights aren’t just for those leading teams - there’s something valuable here for anyone working in data. Trust us, it’s worth a watch! Some of the highlights! 🎥 Human-Centric Leadership 🤝 People over technology. Understanding your team’s emotions and needs is key to tackling any challenge. Trust & Vulnerability 🚀 Effective leaders build trust by being open and showing vulnerability—this creates a space where teams feel empowered to innovate and take risks. Psychological Safety 💬 Safe spaces aren’t just buzzwords. They’re essential for fostering honest conversations, admitting mistakes, and driving innovation. Inclusivity 🌍 Valuing every voice on the team leads to richer ideas and solutions—diversity truly drives creativity. Continuous Learning 🧠 Never stop learning! Encouraging ongoing development keeps the team adaptable and engaged in a fast-changing field. And perhaps the most resonant takeaway? Servant Leadership 🏅 Prioritising the team’s needs above your own cultivates a loyal, motivated, and highly effective team. Why are people joining the Technical and Strategic Data Leader cohort? Here's what participants are saying: -> "Be better equipped to mature our data team and organization to elevate to the next level" -> "Learn more from a Chief Data Office perspective and better understand data architecture" -> "Develop my data skills" -> “To get a better sense of the purpose of my data team, and a strategy for how to achieve that purpose. And connect with other data leaders!” -> "Curiosity, exchange of experience, inspiration" -> "I believe the course will help me discern strategic objectives for my career as I take on more leadership responsibilities in my role." -> "Continuous improvement, networking, and peer-to-peer collaboration" -> "Collaboration with fellow cohort members, strategy sessions, and learning from the collective wisdom of others who may have had similar challenges in the data space." In short, people want: - Community - Growth - Leadership Our 3rd cohort is launching this fall. Limited seats. Join James Serra, Ahmad Chamy, and myself while we still have room. Brilliant piece . This sounds so intuitive, but often is not followed. While there is a lots of noise on algorithms and processing more chunks , the basics remain. Thanks Michael Hlava for sharing. #Analytics #DataScience #BackToBasics
As data and analytics become increasingly embedded in business decision-making and solutions, data teams must move well beyond merely solving the problems they’ve been assigned. Data leaders and their teams must focus instead on the terms “collaboration and communication.” This means becoming more adept at broader roles that help them spot the real problem, scope out its nature and importance, shepherd the process with periodic updates, and deliver and translate solutions that will truly make an impact. #businessaanalytics #dataanalytics #businessintelligence

The role of Chief Data Officer has evolved far beyond its traditional roots in data governance and management. Dan Roberts explains for CIO Online how today's CDOs are emerging as key strategic leaders driving business transformation. Data is no longer just a technical asset to be managed. It's the currency that powers innovation, decision-making, and competitive advantage. The most successful CDOs aren't the ones creating "endless one-offs and shiny baubles." They're the ones who can translate data capabilities into clear business outcomes, communicate value across diverse stakeholders, and balance rapid innovation with responsible governance. The CDO's expanding mandate, from AI strategy to data literacy programs to cross-functional collaboration, signals something important ‼️ we've entered an era where data leadership is business leadership ‼️

Data: The Most Valuable Yet Untapped Resource Data is no longer just a byproduct of business operations—it’s the most valuable asset organizations possess. Yet, for many, it remains largely untapped, underutilized, or undervalued. The role of the Chief Data Officer (CDO) is evolving, as highlighted in this insightful CIO article. CDOs are no longer just stewards of compliance and governance; they are stepping into strategic roles, driving innovation, improving decision-making, and enabling long-term growth through data-driven insights. Organizations that treat data as a core business asset—investing in the tools, culture, and talent to unlock its potential—are poised to outpace their competitors. Data can inform product innovation, optimize operations, and personalize customer experiences in ways that were once unimaginable. #DataStrategy #Leadership #Innovation #DigitalTransformation
