A very important win for PRINTING United Alliance members (and non-members) in New York as EPR legislation failed to pass. If you're not yet a member, this is a perfect example of why you should be. We're here looking out for you either way, but the more members we have the louder our voices become. Everyone wants a safer and cleaner environment but it's important that the lawmakers behind these bills understand the lack of toxicity of carbon black incorporated into printing inks and how technology has solved the problem of sorting black plastic for recycling. The Alliance made carbon black the focal point of its opposition and prepared letters of opposition, a white paper on how carbon black is not toxic when incorporated into an ink, and how black plastic can be easily separated for recycling. The Alliance used its available resources to bring attention to the issue with its membership in New York and across the entire printing industry value chain. Great job by Gary Jones, Sara Osorio, ASP and the entire Alliance team.

It’s crazy how far this got but thanks to your org for trying to inject common sense into this argument. So much education is needed to combat these bonkers regulations. Thanks!

We want to thank our members in NY for being a great partner in the effort to stop the legislation. It was very contentious with emotions running high on both sides of the bill. In the end, the cumulative impact of the unintended consequences such as the ban on carbon black, costs to citizens of New York, and impossible mandates for packaging proved that bill was not feasible.
