DB Cargo UK is proud to announce that we’ve created what we believe to be the UK’s first ‘net zero’ rail freight terminal.
Situated in Cricklewood, North London, our terminal is used to transport aggregates and construction waste in and out of the capital, significantly reducing congestion on London’s already crowded road network.
But it’s the introduction of a wide range of other environmental mitigation measures that have really slashed the site’s carbon footprint, including construction of one of Europe’s largest ‘living’ acoustic barriers.

Welcome to Cricklewood, the first net zero rail site in the UK. Here at Cricklewood, we're at the heart of construction logistics for London and the southeast. It's a very sensitive site that sits in the heart of a very urban area of North London, and as such we have to be very mindful of the impact of our operations on the environment and those residents who live nearby. Behind me is Cricklewood Green Acoustic Wall, a key part of our sustainability efforts. First, it reduces noise pollution, creating a better environment for the local community. Second, acts as a natural. Robin Singh absorbing CO2 and pollutants in the atmosphere and said it's creating a safe and thriving urban biodiversity habitat. One of the biggest steps you've taken is transitioning our plant machinery to HBO fuel. This low carbon alternative to diesel cuts emissions by up to 98%. Our new will wash is a simple but effective solution. It reduces dust and debris from leaving the terminal, improving local air quality and making sure we are not impacting surrounding roads. We invest in the state-of-the-art technology. For example, noise monitors, air quality control systems and dust monitoring systems. Every time we receive an alert that there's potential exceedance, then we could take action and intervene. We've also avoided 40 tons of carbon by repurposing an old cabin that existed on a redundant rail freight facility on the other side of London. By making reuse the norm rather than the exception, DB Cargo UK is proving that sustainability is not just a goal, it's a practical, achievable way to operate. We've actually gone as far as to give our colleagues on site green skills training. So whenever they're making a decision, they're not just thinking about the financial impact, they're not just thinking about the operational impact and thinking about the environmental impacts and the social impact. Our carbon neutral terminals plan, we'll see sustainability innovations like these that we're embedding here at Cricklewood rolled out across our other sites and showing that DB Cargo UK continues to lead the way in a low carbon logistics feature.
