I will be contributing as an independent expert on socioeconomic burden to the update of the Oxford Health Policy Forum's global MS Brain Health: Time Matters policy report. The original policy report was published in 2015, and much has changed since then. The report will also be expanded to cover NMOSD and MOGAD, underserved conditions which may be misdiagnosed as MS. Similar principles apply to bring about high-quality care, including timely diagnosis and management. #healthpolicy #MSbrainhealth #NMOSD #MOGAD

Hamilton residents living in north and east-end neighbourhoods with L8L and L8H postal codes and mountain neighbourhoods with an L8V postal code develop almost double the amount of #sepsis compared to those living elsewhere in the city, a study published in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia has found. Several Hamilton communities – including neighbourhoods in these postal codes — have long been identified as facing increased challenges, such as more difficulty accessing health care, higher rates of poverty, and language barriers. The study's findings tell us what's happening in these postal codes in regards to sepsis, says Fatima Sheikh, the McMaster University PhD candidate who led the study. But the data doesn't reveal why. Collecting #healthequity data is critical to understanding 'the why.' Preventing hospital-acquired sepsis is a strategic priority for Hamilton Health Sciences. In April, the Institute of Equity released a report - with news coverage on it this month summarising the following: 💬 "Poorer people dying increasingly younger than richer people as 'dismal' life expectancy gap grows, report finds" The Director of IHE being Sir Michael Marmot who you may remember seeing at BSLM 2023, was quoted in the news coverage also: 💬 "Not only is health the foremost concern of your local constituents, communities and businesses, health is also an indicator of how well a nation is performing. Unfortunately, Britain is performing poorly." We are disappointed to read the latest about the widening gap in health in England. Lifestyle Medicine is a core medical skill but cannot be practiced without policy and public health that enables people to lead healthy lives. 🧬 We hope to read a more positive outcome in future reports, however reports like these are important in enticing change. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can cause significant long-term socioeconomic and health impacts. In their upcoming August 2024 article published today as an Ahead Of Print article, Thomas Selden and colleagues at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality examine the associations between ACEs and health care utilization and expenditures. The researchers find that adults with ACEs had higher utilization and 26.3 percent higher expenditures than those without ACEs. In 2021, adults with ACEs spent $292 billion more on health care.
