Whenever I mention that about 20% of Singapore's GDP is from Manufacturing Sector, I am always asked the following questions. 1. Given that Singapore is very expensive, why do companies want to manufacture in Singapore? 2. Do I foresee whether Singapore will continue to be global manufacturing hub in the future? The answer to both questions is as follows. It all depends on the nature of manufacturing. Given its high cost of manpower, logic should suggest that Singapore should not be able to sustain a huge manufacturing sector. However, if the cost of Real Estate and People is significantly lower than the overall cost of the product, then Singapore is an ideal place for manufacturing. This means, the nature of such a manufacturing sector is Capital and Technology intensive. This will also mean that the manufacturing process is highly automated and require minimum manual interaction or intervention. Any company thinking of establishing a manufacturing facility in Singapore or any company is currently struggling with high cost of manufacturing given the rising people and real estate cost, should adopt I4.0 (Industry 4.0) to mitigate the high cost structure.
