One step away from the conclusion of the sale, according to press leaks reported by Corriere della Sera, the agreement for the sale of ITA Airways to Lufthansa is at risk, government sources seem to confirm the tension between the parties. Lufthansa Group has reportedly communicated to the #MEF (italian Ministry of Economy and Finance) that, according to an assessment by the German group, #ITAAirways has lost value in the last 6 months. Consequently, #Lufthansa is reportedly intending to pay the company, as part of the capital increase provided for by the agreement, a lower sum than initially agreed. China Airlines to Retrofit 15 A350-900s with Airbus Support - China Airlines (Taiwan) has signed a contract with Airbus to perform integration and technical services for the retrofit of its 15 A350-900 aircraft. Although the beginning of the year is typically a low season for Austrian Airlines, several factors contributed to an adjusted EBIT of -62 million euros in the first six months of the current year. This result is significantly lower than the airline's expectations. The main contributor to the negative result was the months-long wage dispute at the beginning of the year, but the first half of 2024 also presented other challenges, including the situation in the Middle East, adverse weather conditions in Europe, the rising location costs, stagnating ticket prices and two prolonged fleet disruptions at Austrian Airlines. Austrian Airlines (AUA) has been part of the Lufthansa Group for 15 years. The sale by the Austrian government in Sep-2009 was prompted by the 2008 global financial crisis, which exacerbated a period of loss-making by its national airline. Lufthansa's ownership has given AUA a more financially secure footing, and it reported positive operating profits from 2013 until the COVID-19 crisis. AUA's fleet has been simplified and its route network has been pruned. It recently started replacing its Boeing 777 and 767 widebody fleet (average age 25 years) with 787-9s - a modernisation programme that is due to last until 2028. AUA's Airbus A320 family fleet has an average age of 19 years, so new narrowbodies must be next on the shopping list. However, although the airline returned to profit in 2023, AUA's profitability remains somewhat brittle, and its parent will expect a suitable return on any further investment in new fleet.
