Hyundai Motor Group, under the direction of our visionary Executive Chair, never stops innovating to improve how people and goods move more sustainably, safely and efficiently. Our Class 8 XCIENT Fuel Cell commercial vehicle is a great example. Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) is doubling down on EV passenger cars, while also producing more hybrids. We’re also working on a longer-term time horizon that includes hydrogen solutions for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Hyundai Motor Company unveiled a new partnership to test Level 4 autonomous driving technology with our XCIENT truck at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo. By adding autonomous capabilities to the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-powered XCIENT Fuel Cell truck, Hyundai is looking forward to providing fleets and vehicle operators additional solutions that enhance road safety and freight efficiencies thanks to Plus’s industry-leading autonomous driving technology. You can read more about it below. It’s a great time to be with Hyundai! https://lnkd.in/gDpdX4Mw

Hyundai has some very nice passenger electric vehicles, but they also have a toe in the hydrogen fuel cell market - such as it is - with the Nexo...and their XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks. Those trucks are being tested with autonomous driving features provided by Plus’ SuperDrive system. This is a Level 4 autonomous package that uses LiDAR, radar, and cameras, to provide surround perception, planning, prediction, and self-driving capabilities. Level 4 is summed up by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as “system drives, you ride,” but more specifically means: - No human interaction is required in most circumstances. - Can intervene if there is a system failure. - May not have a steering wheel and pedals. - Can operate in self-driving mode. - Usually works for location-restricted trips. Long distance commercial trucking is cited as an ideal early adopter use case for autonomous driving, and many manufacturers are testing such systems, but coupling this with a FCEV big rig seems future tech coupled with dead in the water tech. Examples galore show that hydrogen is not a cost-effective fuel and despite claims that green hydrogen $ / kg will drop with scale, that ignores the proven efficiency and immediacy of battery electric transport. Indeed, in their review of the 2024 Hyundai Nexo, Car and Driver magazine that the car "may not even make sense in California." If a FCEV does not make sense in the heartland of hydrogen vehicle infrastructure, expecting it to make sense for commercial truckers globally seems optimistic at best. But the L4 autonomous driving tech is cool, and I wonder if that is the focus of Hyundai's trial. Hydrogen triggers interest, but autonomy pays the bills! https://lnkd.in/gNVtksWr

Another OEM Entering the Class-8 EV Market Hyundai Motor Unveils Level 4 Autonomous Fuel Cell Electric Truck Nolan Beilstein 5/22/2024 Hyundai Motor Company and autonomous driving software developer Plus announced the updated XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck — now characterized as a Level 4 autonomous Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric truck. Adding Self-Driving to the Truck The collaboration between Hyundai and Plus integrates Plus’ Level 4 SuperDrive autonomous driving system into Hyundai Motor’s fuel cell electric truck. XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck Is the First Class 8 to Do This The XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck is currently undergoing autonomous driving tests in the United States. According to a Hyundai Motor press release, it is the first Class 8 fuel cell electric truck to be tested at Level 4 self-driving. Since its debut in 2020, Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck has been in commercial operations across eight countries. Last year, the company revealed the XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor, a Class 8 6×4 fuel cell electric model with a pair of 90-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell systems and a 350-kilowatt electric motor, which provides a range of more than 450 miles. The Quest for Safe, Sustainable Transportation Plus is deploying its SuperDrive solution across Europe, Australia, and the U.S. The system features various sensors, including cameras, radar, and LiDAR, for planning, perception, self-driving, and prediction. Plus co-founder and COO Shawn Kerrigan praised the collaboration, highlighting its goal to develop safer and more sustainable transportation solutions.

General Motors (GM) says it will cease efforts to develop a fleet of autonomous robotaxis, shifting its focus to driver-assistance technology for privately owned vehicles. The choice to exit an increasingly competitive and resource-intensive market is a considerable pivot for the auto giant. It shows the company has recalibrated its focus to concentrate on improving near-term driver assistance over the costly and uncertain full autonomy of the future. The robotaxi initiative was spearheaded by Cruise, a majority-owned subsidiary of GM. While Cruise had been a pioneer in self-driving technology, the company faced mounting challenges, including regulatory setbacks and escalating costs. GM estimated that scaling a robotaxi business would require more than $10 billion in additional investment. By redirecting resources, the automaker expects to save $1 billion annually.
