Amazon places more freighters with Sun Country Airlines 🛫 Amazon Air has placed an additional eight Boeing 737-800 freighters with Sun Country Airlines as it deepens its partnership with the Minneapolis-headquartered carrier. The amended air transport service agreement means Sun Country, which operates in the US and the Americas, will now operate a total of 20 737-800 freighters on behalf of the e-commerce giant. Meanwhile, the length of the CMI agreement has been extended by five years to 2030 with a series of three options that if exercised would extend the deal through to 2037. The first additional aircraft is expected to begin service in the first quarter of 2025 and all eight aircraft are expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2025. “Amazon is an extremely important customer to Sun Country and strong execution on our current cargo services positioned us well to grow our business. We look forward to continuing to provide services to Amazon into the 2030s,” said Jude Bricker, chief executive, Sun Country. The move comes after Atlas Air earlier this year said it was backing out of operating 737 freighter aircraft on behalf of Amazon. Atlas has been operating both 737 and 767 freighters for Amazon for a number of years, but these deals will now end next year. Atlas reasoned that it wanted to concentrate on operating widebody freighters on long-haul markets. Meanwhile, Amazon has been simplifying its domestic US network over the past year, according to a report issued earlier this year by the Chaddick Institute. The changes have seen the carrier utilise larger aircraft – such as A330-300 operated by Hawaiian and more 767s operated by ATSG – and consolidate operations at fewer hubs. In the process, the percentage of the fleet comprised of 737 or smaller planes has fallen from 38% to 33% over the past year (as of March). The carrier also stopped using ATR-72 turboprops over the last year and reduced the number of airports it flew to. The report said that the move to a hub and spoke operation and away from point-to-point flying brings its strategy closer to that of express giants UPS and FedEx. “Amazon Air’s network has gradually grown to be more like that of FedEx and UPS,” the report stated. “These air cargo integrators have long been hub-centric, with nearly identical schedules day after day (except for weekends and holidays). “Their networks have been gradually fine-tuned to maximise their versatility for guaranteed delivery the next morning or afternoon. Amazon is pursuing a similar strategy in North America. More than four in five Amazon Air flights (80.5%) within the US mainland operate to or from its five largest hubs, up from 65.6% in early 2021.” Sun Country first started operating aircraft for Amazon in May 2020 after the two companies struck a 10-aircraft sublease deal, which was later extended by two more aircraft. #primeair #airlines #freightforwarding #amazon

Atlas Air will stop flying freighter aircraft in Amazon’s domestic parcel network by the middle of next year and concentrate on international widebody service for its growing customer base, which will soon include Chinese e-commerce giants Shein and Temu, CEO Michael Steen said in an interview. Both parties have agreed to terminate contracts under which Atlas provides crews, routine maintenance and insurance (CMI) for 25 converted freighters: eight Boeing 737-800s and 17 Boeing 767-300s. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is responsible for providing the aircraft. The contracts were to expire in March 2026. At the same time, privately held Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and the e-commerce giant have agreed to extend for three years the leases on 16 B767s operated by Atlas Air, Steen said. The aircraft are owned by Atlas’ leasing subsidiary, Titan Aviation, and were originally leased to Amazon for 10 years. The e-tailer, which separately hired Atlas to fly the aircraft, will be free to transfer the aircraft to another operator that signs a CMI contract. Titan leases 19 total 767 aircraft to Amazon, including two that are operated by rival Air Transport Services Group (NASDAQ: ATSG). The three aircraft that weren’t extended have extension options. Amazon directly controls the eight 737-800s, which are leased from AerCap and could also be placed with another cargo airline. Steen said Atlas Air will reallocate resources to intercontinental operations, where the potential for profits is greater. Toward that end, the airline is adding eight widebody freighters in 2024. Two 777 production freighters ordered from Boeing last year are scheduled to enter service in the fourth quarter for an undisclosed customer. Ocean shipping giant CMA CGM recently announced that its startup airline has struck a CMI agreement with Atlas Air to operate two Boeing 777 freighters on trans-Pacific routes, starting in the coming months. And Atlas Air recently acquired four previously owned Boeing 747-400 cargo jets that will join the fleet in the third quarter, two of which will be dedicated to Shein and Temu. “So strategically, as we think about the return on investment on the assets that we’re deploying, we are definitely going for the larger widebody aircraft and the intercontinental market where growth is the strongest,” Steen told FreightWaves.

Very well explained! There is a difference between manufacturer and maintenance shops.
OK. Another issue to confuse the public and politicians alike. A FEDEX B67 landed with a NLG collapsed overseas. This is not a factory issue it's a maintenance issue. So refrain from confusing the two. Boeing builds new aircraft. Aircraft operators are in charge of maintenance.

Passenger aircraft VS Cargo plane Passenger aircraft: As the name suggests, it's a plane that's entirely used to carry passengers, which is the kind of flight we normally take. Sometimes passenger planes also have aircraft cargo holds, but due to space constraints, the cargo hold is only about 150 cubic meters, but it is mainly used for checking luggage and transporting small goods. Cargo plane: A transport aircraft used to carry cargo. A cargo aircraft usually refers to a civilian cargo aircraft used for commercial flights. Freighter type ▼ It was built as a cargo plane. A cargo plane converted from a passenger plane. Remove the seats and the onboard service facilities such as the kitchen, and install the facilities required for the cargo hold such as the slide rail, and then become a cargo plane. At present, there are few civil aircraft designed specifically for cargo, and most freighters are converted from retired passenger aircraft, such as many freighters operated by large freight companies such as fedex, UPS, and DHL Freight in Germany. ▼ Passenger and cargo aircraft. The front half is for passengers and the back half is for cargo. Passenger planes have more boarding doors and escape doors, cargo planes are equipped with fewer boarding doors, replaced by larger cargo doors, distributed in the front and rear sections of the cargo bay, as well as the lower cargo bay, these doors are more than 2 meters high, more than 3 meters wide for loading cargo. Passenger planes carry a small amount of cargo, mainly baggage, cargo planes have a larger load. At present, in general, there are usually two ways of air cargo, one is full cargo air cargo, the other is the use of passenger aircraft belly cargo. Various airlines have more or less cargo and passenger aircraft, flying around the world, acting as the porters of the aviation industry, speeding up the transport of goods, promoting the process of globalization. US authority orders safety check of additional Boeing 737s The US Transportation Safety Authority has issued urgent "safety recommendations" for certain Boeing 737 models. The reason is an incident with a blocked rudder at United Airlines. Boeing is once again facing safety problems. New safety concerns with Boeing aircraft The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued urgent safety recommendations for some Boeing 737 aircraft on Thursday. The focus is on the rudder system, which has been identified as being at risk of blockages. The trigger for these recommendations was an incident on February 6, 2024, in which the rudder pedals of a United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 were "stuck" in the neutral position during landing at Newark Airport in New Jersey. Fortunately, none of the 161 passengers and crew members were injured in the incident. The captain was able to bring the aircraft to a safe stop by controlling the nose wheel. Investigations revealed that a faulty roll guide actuator, a component of the rudder system, was responsible for the blockage. Faulty components and safety risks As reported by Reuters, Collins Aerospace was found to have supplied Boeing with more than 353 faulty actuators since February 2017. These components were installed in some Boeing 737 MAX and older 737 NG aircraft. The NTSB said the affected actuator was vulnerable to moisture, which could freeze and limit the movement of the rudder system. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it would convene a corrective action review panel on Friday to determine next steps based on the NTSB's recommendations. United Airlines, the only U.S. airline to have the affected components on its aircraft, said it replaced all of the parts in question earlier this year. Ongoing safety issues at Boeing This incident is the latest in a series of safety issues Boeing has faced recently. It was only in January 2024 that an incident involving an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9, in which a door cover came loose during flight, led to increased controls and restrictions for the aircraft manufacturer. The ongoing difficulties have also had personnel consequences. At the end of March 2024, then Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun announced his resignation at the end of the year. Ultimately, his departure was brought forward to August 7, 2024, and Kelly Ortberg took over the position of President and CEO from August 8, 2024
