Between April 1st and May 15th, 2024, ERI conducted a survey of organizational responses concerning remote work and artificial intelligence. There were 270 organizations that submitted answers to the survey during that time. The goal of this survey was to identify the changes that organizations are making to their labor and compensation practices as a direct result of the rise in remote workforces and economic gauges, such as inflation. ERI's white paper offers insight into the present impact of these compensation drivers. To summarize the results of the study, this paper is split into the following sections: Remote Work Changes, Compensation Planning Changes, Geographic Pay Differences, Artificial Intelligence Expectations, and Organization Scope. This is our opportunity, if we grasp it. 🌟 In its 'Future of Professionals' report, Thomson Reuters estimates that AI will save knowledge workers 12 hours per week by 2029. 🤖 Their extrapolation of how these productivity gains might be distributed is quite different to the vision we set out in our recent Work Time Reduction report with The Autonomy Institute {'GPT-4(DAY WEEK)' - link in comments} which is referenced in this same article, however. In the future scenario predicted by this report, the AI-powered efficiency gains are directly and solely transposed into more billable hours and in turn more corporate profits. 💰 In most organizations, half of the available 12 hours of efficiency savings would be sufficient to realize a #4DayWeek for employees, while reinvesting 6 hours worth of time into productive activity or new projects and initiatives. ⚖ Whether or not this latest wave of technological and economic advancement benefits us all as well as corporations is up to us. History tells us that the surest way of equitably distributing tech-driven productivity growth with the workforce is through work time reduction. We're on a mission to make this happen. Who's with us? 📣

I am a big fan of the research that Microsoft and LinkedIn have been conducting on the future of work. Which is why I was thrilled to be invited to serve on the advisory board for their 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report. Researchers drew upon a vast amount of data from 31,000 workers in 31 countries to analyze what is really happening with AI in organizations. Based on their findings, I believe we are entering a new era of the employer-employee relationship. Essentially, the workers who are using and experimenting with AI are gaining power to renegotiate what I am calling the “operational contract” of work, as per below. 📜 This trend was kickstarted with the debates over remote and hybrid work. People want more say in HOW they get their jobs done. Being an AI “power user,” as the report shows, gives workers an edge in those negotiations – it might even help break the career ceilings that have traditionally held some people back. Yet this is not just about the rise in employees’ ability to call the shots. The report also shows how organizations can drive their side of the operational contract by overcoming inertia and engaging in the AI transformation process. Ideally, we’ll leave this era with benefits for all stakeholders – the best operational contracts will improve work life as well as work outcomes. See my first comment for link to the 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report.
