Today in Autonomy: NATO's Drones Get Guard Duty! NATO is advancing plans to deploy unmanned surface vessels (USVs) to safeguard critical undersea infrastructure, such as communication cables and pipelines, in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. Admiral Pierre Vandier, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, likened the deployment to urban CCTV systems that monitor and record activities in high-risk areas. He emphasized that existing technology enables continuous monitoring of maritime environments, both on the surface and underwater. The urgency of this project has intensified following recent incidents of undersea cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea, suspected to be acts of sabotage. In response, NATO is conducting maritime exercises involving underwater drones and minesweeper ships equipped with sonar scanners to enhance monitoring capabilities. NATO plans to present the initial outcomes of the USV fleet before its next summit in June 2025, with the goal of achieving operational capability by that time. #USV #UxS #DRONEWAREFARE #UNDERSEA #USNAVY #NATO #ROYALNAVY https://lnkd.in/ggdD6H_F

Brilliant opportunities for the #Aerospace and #Defence industry with the European Defence Agency. PUBLIC TENDERS ARE ONLINE: Deadline for submission 16 September 2024, 17h00 CET. ✌🏼✈️ #aerospaceindustry #DEFENCEindustry #defenseindustry
Call to #industry and economic operators: procurement cluster on enablers for safe integration of military #air capabilities in the #EuropeanSky Military operations rely heavily on secure and unhindered access to airspace. This access is crucial for all aircraft types, from traditional manned aircraft to the newest unmanned aircraft systems (#UAS). 🛩 However, the growing complexity of #airspace usage, with the introduction of novel technologies and evolving military tactics, presents a significant challenge. Recognizing this complexity, the European Defence Agency has taken a leading role in promoting safe airspace integration. The "Enablers for safe airspace integration of military air capabilities in the European sky" represents a significant initiative aimed at equipping European militaries for efficient and secure airspace access. This cluster initiative encompasses four distinct projects, each tackling specific aspects of safe airspace integration: Lot 1️⃣ - UAS Experimental Integration: focuses on developing and testing new technologies that facilitate seamless and safe integration of UAS into shared airspace, in all spectrum environments – high TRL. Lot 2️⃣ - UAS Risk Assessment: tackles the crucial task of assessing the risks posed by, and to, UAS operating within shared airspace. Lot 3️⃣ - High-Altitude Operations addresses security and defence challenges and opportunities associated with operations conducted at high altitudes. Lot 4️⃣ - Needs-assessment, Market research and Consultation: aims at collecting the requirements of UAS end-users, conducting state of the art review and execution of a market research and consultations on airspace integration of military air capabilities. Spain’s Ministry of Defence has announced significant progress in the SIRTAP Programme (High-Performance Tactical Remotely Piloted Aircraft System), marking a milestone for Spanish aerospace innovation. The programme has maintained its planned schedule, with the first prototype and flight of the advanced drone expected in 2025, following the Critical Design Review achieved in June 2024. The SIRTAP will be Spain’s first fully domestically developed military aviation system in the Class II/III category. Designed to enhance the tactical capabilities of both the Army and the Air and Space Force, the drone will operate in demanding environments. It is equipped for advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions in day and night operations, withstanding extreme weather conditions, including high and low temperatures. The project envisions the production of nine systems, each comprising three unmanned aircraft, a ground control station, and two simulators. All aircraft will be manufactured and assembled at the Airbus Defence and Space plant in Getafe, Madrid. This facility serves as the programme’s industrial leader, integrating numerous Spanish companies through its Industrial Participation Plan. This initiative is expected to be a catalyst for growth in Spain’s aerospace sector.
