This map illustrates the importance of the partnership between states, #Amtrak, the Class I Railroads, and the #FRA in the planning, development, implementation, and funding of our inter-city passenger rail network. These state-supported inter-city corridors are an essential element of the national transportation network. Imagine this map without the red lines and you can instantly see the voids and missing links between the major metros and smaller communities. These state-supported inter-city passenger corridors not only serve as extensions to Amtrak long-distance and regional services, they also provide critical connections, additional capacity to the transportation network, and system redundancy. Another consideration is the additional frequencies that are provided by these state-supported services that improve convenience for travelers.

Taking trains are supposed to be less carbon-intensive than flying, however not necessarily on Amtrak. Taking trains in the Northeast US or West Coast are generally electrified, however outside of those areas long-haul trains use diesel engines from the 1970s. Their carbon footprint adds up: https://lnkd.in/e9xrXFRD

Today's Passenger Rail Performance data from #ORR shows performance is down in Q2 of 2024-25, compared with the same quarter last year. Cancellations are up overall, and punctuality has declined for almost all operators. This clearly demonstrates that systemic problems, rather than ownership, are the root cause of underperformance. Our statement here: Andy Bagnall, said ‘The latest Office of Rail and Road (ORR) data shows public and private train companies continue to face the same performance challenges. Simply changing who runs the trains won’t deliver more reliable services for passengers. ‘The key to improving performance and holding down fares is restoring the railway to financial sustainability. It is counter intuitive to start removing private sector operators from the system, with their track record of delivering growth to reduce subsidy, when government has not yet set out the detail of how it intends to create a more reliable and affordable experience for passengers.’ #railindustry #passengers #ORR

The next time someone tells you that people don’t want to ride the train anymore, show them this. According to NPR, Amtrak is going to beat its 2019 record for ridership. It is projected to surpass the record of 32 million riders this year, with 24 million riders as of June. We’ve seen airline outages, record congestion on highways, and many more reasons people want to ride the train. If this many people want to ride with less than adequate coverage in many communities, imagine what we can do with expanded coverage across America. #Trains #Amtrak #PublicTransit #Transportation #Rail

#Traditional_costing methods are not always accurate, particularly in industries with a lot of indirect costs. #Activity_based_costing is a modern approach that is seen as providing more accurate and reliable information. Some #airlines have already adopted this method, and it's now being suggested that #airports do the same to benefit in areas such as pricing, budgeting, and performance evaluation.

President and CEO - Rail Passengers Association (NARP)
11moFederal Railroad Administration has significantly improved the presentation of this data with the new report format. The one-page route summaries are really terrific, and help the fare-paying and tax-paying public really understand the state of our service. I also note that we're seeing, slowly but surely, meaningful improvement in Customer On-Time Performance systemwide, with seven routes improving by at least 20 points or more. This is a very welcome development!
