Custom internal tools vs SaaS. Let's talk about it. There are so many great SaaS solutions out there that solve specific problems in a way that follows best practices, for the most part, yet companies opt for custom software for internal tools. There is a SaaS for anything, yet the customer internal tools market is 18x larger than total SaaS spend. [insert bajilions $ here] I just tried getting GPT o1 to state an example and the results are hilarious and sad, so I decided to write it myself. A quote must be sent to a public project listed of sam.gov. To understand the bid, you must pull all the information, read them and start putting together the quote, costs, dates. You have multiple entities bidding on different parts of the project since you are working with different distributors on this bid. This means the "quote tool" must have access to your data, your vendors, accounts, partners and you must ask it to automate that quote according to the current schedule you have. It's not like you are sitting around waiting for some branch of the government to answer your bid. See? Even the simplest most straightforward example can highlight with custom internal tools are the wave of the future. A wave where you and the AI can actually do it and we are almost there. All of us.
