📰 I came across another article in The New York Times reflecting on the centuries-long pursuit of immortality and the mix of genuine science, hype, and pseudoscience that has defined this quest: https://lnkd.in/deKrQzD3 💡 While I agree that some of the past and even current claims in the field of longevity have lacked rigor, I also believe we are now at a pivotal point in history where our understanding of the biology of aging has advanced tremendously. Today, we have much stronger evidence that targeting aging at its roots can have a profound impact on healthspan and potentially lifespan. 🔎 Despite this progress, it’s important to remain diligent. The growing popularity of the longevity field brings with it the risk of overhyped claims, which could foster skepticism, even within the scientific community. The truth is, even the most compelling data from experimental or animal studies must be carefully interpreted in context. Not every study—or its conclusions—translates directly to humans, and data from biased or irrelevant studies can sometimes be misinterpreted, even by established scientists. This risks undermining trust in the field and hindering progress. 🏥 What ultimately matters is whether these findings translate into real, measurable benefits for humans. This is why rigorous, well-designed clinical studies to validate the impact of such therapies in humans are so critical. At the end of the day, only therapies that demonstrate reliable improvements in human health and vitality can be considered true longevity interventions. 📊 Fortunately, we are now living in a time where assessing the effects of longevity interventions is becoming increasingly feasible. Advances in biological age assessments are providing powerful tools to measure health and vitality in ways that were previously unattainable. With continued progress, these tools are becoming even more applicable for evaluating the clinically relevant impact of longevity interventions. These innovations will ensure that progress in the field is grounded in solid evidence, building trust and delivering real solutions that help people live healthier, longer lives. There are many paths to #longevity and healthy #aging. Some are well-established and widely followed. Others are just being discovered. During this week's Milken Institute Global Conference, we hosted a Longevity Lab to discuss the latest in aging science, healthspan-extending therapies, and strategies to enhance wellness on a societal scale. Our experts highlighted: 1. The influence of social determinants in shaping health outcomes, with a focus on lessons from #BlueZones. 2. Breakthroughs in aging research propelled by new data sources, technologies, and precision medicine methodologies in clinical trials. 3. Emerging therapies, including senolytics, exercise-mimicking compounds, and nutritional approaches. 4. The need to integrate individual behaviors with social and policy interventions. Research update 📊 🔹 THE STAGE PROJECT 🔹 STAGE is a European Research and Innovation project studying healthy ageing and multimorbidity using a life-course approach. The consortium's research will utilise longitudinal cohorts and biobanks spanning the entire life course to explore how a person ages with multimorbidity, which means having two or more long-term health conditions, and how it could be prevented. Project Coordinator Professor Sylvain Sebert says: “(…) It will enable us to understand the patterns of ageing and then translate this knowledge into concrete, effective prevention programmes and solutions for people to age more healthily. Far too many people are now burdened with multiple chronic illnesses that combine mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, and physical diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, into multi-morbidity. (…)” The six-year project is Funded by the European Union and we are happy to be a part of this and to investigate how life can be made easier for people living with multimorbidity. This is really good. One of the main challenges with longevity is the lack of clear criteria and standards to define what longevity is in practice. Thinking Back to What We Did During the First Half of the Year… If I think back to the last few months, I am happy and proud to have worked on different aspects of our company: - Path on financial and marketing strategy - Team training and management, without neglecting individual potential - The opportunity to share my insights at two significant events: 🎤 Workshop on Microbiota and Inflammation organized by SelfCoherence - It was an honor to discuss the latest research and advancements in this critical area of health. The seminar provided a comprehensive overview of: - The latest scientific research on microbiota and inflammation - The use of tonic and phasic HRV tests - Understanding and applying microbiota tests and hormonal correlates - Optimizing and personalizing lifestyles for better health outcomes - Applications of PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy) for modulating low-grade inflammation 🎤 School of Preventive, Regenerative, Anti-Aging, and Environmental Medicine organized by the International Longevity Science Association - Speaking at this event was a remarkable experience, where we delved into cutting-edge approaches in preventive and regenerative medicine. It was inspiring to be part of discussions that are shaping the future of health and longevity. These experiences have been incredibly rewarding, offering me the chance to connect with industry leaders, professionals, and doctors. Today we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons. This day is observed annually to recognise the contributions of older individuals and to highlight issues affecting them, as well as encouraging society to value and support older persons through inclusive policies and practices. According to WHO, between 2015 to 2050, the global population aged 60+ is trajected to nearly double from 12% to 22%. “It is beneficial to promote the cognitive health of these individuals and to prevent the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s,” says Harry Tracey who is pioneering research into the role of the microbiota-gut-brain-axis in ageing and health span at Eurecat - Technology Centre, Universitat de Girona and RMIT University. His REDI research project delves into why some people have better cognitive abilities in old age, exploring the gut microbiome's role in age-associated changes. By understanding these dynamics, the aim is to develop novel therapeutics such as probiotics and postbiotics that promote healthy ageing and cognitive function. Is Human Life Expectancy Hitting a Ceiling? Despite advancements in medicine, recent research suggests that our gains in life expectancy are slowing down and may be approaching a biological limit. 🌍 A study in Nature Aging reveals that the world's longest-living populations have only gained about 6.5 years in life expectancy since 1990. This suggests we may be nearing a maximum lifespan of around 125 years. But here’s the key takeaway: While extending our lives might face a ceiling, there’s still room to improve how long we stay healthy. The emerging field of geroscience focuses not just on how long we live, but on extending our healthspan—the years spent in good health. 💡 Why does this matter? Research shows that factors like DNA damage, inflammation, and lifestyle choices all play a role in aging. Instead of just trying to add more years to life, we should focus on how to live those years healthier and more active. As the global population ages, improving healthspan may have a bigger impact on public health than curing individual diseases. We may not live forever, but we can strive to live better.
