When analysing errors in manufacturing processes, using AI and more specifically Deep Learning technologies makes for rapid and precise analysis and interpretation of ever more complex, extensive datasets. "Rice research could make weird AI images a thing of the past" Generative AI models, such as Stable Diffusion and DALL-E, often struggle with creating non-square images, leading to strange visual issues like distorted faces or extra fingers. Rice University computer science doctoral student Moayed Haji Ali introduced a new method, ElasticDiffusion, to address these limitations by separating local and global image details in the diffusion process. This approach helps maintain image consistency across different aspect ratios without requiring additional training. However, it currently takes longer to generate images compared to standard models. Researchers aim to reduce this time while maintaining the quality improvements. Thinking Forward Ideas for your work from MIT Sloan School of Management IA: Everyone faces this existential threat Deep-learning pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield this month received the Nobel Prize in physics “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.” In recent years, Hinton, a recipient of the 2018 Turing Award who has been called the “godfather of AI,” has raised concerns about the power of artificial intelligence. At last year’s EmTech Digital conference, hosted by MIT Technology Review, Hinton said he is worried about the ability of increasingly powerful machines to outperform humans in ways that are not in humanity’s best interest. Of particular concern to Hinton: • Computer models are exceeding human capabilities. Large language models like GPT-4 have far fewer neural connections than humans do, but they manage to know a thousand times as much. • The “alignment problem” — that is, making sure that AI is doing what humans want it to do — needs to be addressed. AI models could create their own goals and perhaps learn how to manipulate people, he said. • There are no simple solutions. Hinton said the training of powerful AI systems is likely to continue, partly because of competition between companies and countries. But everyone faces this existential threat. “So we all ought to be able to cooperate on trying to stop it,” he said.
