Does AI provide businesses with advantages at the expense of their employees? Toys"R"Us partnered with OpenAI, making a bold statement at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity by premiering a 66-second, completely AI-generated advertisement to the ad world's elite. The message was loud and clear: Generative AI, particularly the OpenAI generative video technology known as Sora, is ready for commercial use. However, writer and Emmy-nominated comedian Mike Drucker isn't impressed, suggesting that Toys"R"Us only succeeded in demonstrating its disregard for artists and the creative process. As a marketing professional, I find myself torn. On one hand, I consider this a genius move by Toys"R"Us—all the extra publicity at no cost is smart.
