I have been speaking to d&i Leaders (Diversity and Inclusion Leaders) about how we can recognise and reward #employeenetworks. In this piece, I discuss the importance of employee networks with Jo Faragher (she/her), but we also examine why they are often undervalued. I think that’s mainly because employers can see employee networks as passion projects. This hugely undervalues the work of the network and the people within it, don’t you think⁉ I want to encourage employers to provide network leaders with protected time to fulfil the additional work and ensure that the work takes place during working hours. I also think that many network leads are looking for visibility. Employers can fulfil this by inviting network leads to present their work, achievements and successes to the senior team and feature their work in internal and external communications. What do you think? What else can we do to reward employee networks? #commentbelow #employeeculture #productivity #employeeengagement

Tips to Build Trust in the Workplace According to MITSloan, “Trusting employees are 260% more motivated to work, have 41% lower rates of absenteeism, and are 50% less likely to look for another job. But consider this: We also found that roughly 1 in 4 workers don’t trust their employer. At the same time, most employers overestimate their workforce’s trust level by almost 40%.” Leaders can create a positive workplace culture by utilizing some of these tips noted below where trust flourishes, ultimately leading to increased engagement, productivity, and organizational success. ✅ Lead by Example: Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and transparency in all your actions and communications. ✅ Communicate Openly: Foster an environment of open communication where employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and ideas. ✅ Be Transparent: Keep employees informed about relevant decisions, changes, and developments within the organization. ✅ Show Empathy: Demonstrate empathy and understanding towards your employees' perspectives, feelings, and needs. ✅ Respect Boundaries: Respect employees' boundaries and privacy. Avoid micromanaging and allow employees the autonomy to do their jobs effectively. ✅ Delegate Responsibility: Empower employees by delegating meaningful tasks and responsibilities. Trust them to take ownership of their work and make decisions within their areas of expertise. ✅ Recognition: Acknowledge and appreciate employees' contributions and achievements regularly. ✅ Offer Development Opportunities: Provide training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement to help them reach their full potential. ✅ Follow Through on Promises: Honor commitments and follow through on promises. ✅ Authenticity: Be genuine and authentic in your interactions with employees. Show vulnerability when appropriate and admit mistakes when they occur. ✅ Create a Positive Work Environment: Foster a positive and inclusive work environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and supported. ✅ Seek Feedback: Regularly solicit feedback from employees about their experiences, concerns, and suggestions for improvement. The modern workplace is experiencing a significant shift, with employee engagement on a notable decline, primarily due to internal and macroeconomic factors. This shift has resulted in issues such as worker burnout and decreased productivity. Addressing these challenges requires business leaders to invest in and advocate for their employees effectively, ensuring that the workplace fosters a culture where workers can develop their skills and feel valued. A focus on employee engagement is crucial, as it's closely tied to employee retention and overall organizational performance. Offering opportunities for professional development, recognizing achievements, and providing fair compensation are essential strategies that enhance morale and drive business success. As workplaces evolve to be more flexible, these elements become increasingly important in promoting higher output and efficiency. Moreover, it is important for leadership to understand the human element at the core of corporate achievements. A human-centered approach requires dismissing the misconception that empathy undermines authority. Instead, empathy should be seen as complementary to achieving business goals. Leaders must support their employees comprehensively, ensuring that human needs are met alongside business objectives. Leaders should also set an example by promoting open communication and feedback within the organization. Creating opportunities for employees to express their thoughts and participate in discussions about workplace improvements is vital for continuous development and engagement. From the beginning of their tenure, employees should experience a workplace that values their input and recognizes their contributions. This approach not only improves current employee satisfaction and productivity but also helps attract future talent who are aligned with these values. Investing in employees is not just beneficial for the present; it sets a precedent for future business practices that prioritize both efficiency and empathy. This balance is increasingly important as businesses navigate post-pandemic challenges and look towards a more integrated and humane approach to corporate success. The Importance of Valuing High Performance and Trust in the Workplace It’s interesting to observe how quickly a company’s focus can shift when they fail to recognize the value of high-performing, trust-building individuals. These employees are often the backbone of innovation and productivity, driving results and inspiring their peers. When their contributions go unnoticed or unappreciated, it sends a message that performance and trustworthiness are not valued. This lack of recognition can lead to disengagement and a decline in morale, ultimately affecting the entire organization. Companies that fail to nurture their top talent risk losing them to competitors who understand the importance of investing in their people. Creating an environment where high performers feel valued is not just a retention strategy; it’s essential for fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration. The Reality: While employees are often expected to provide two weeks' notice, the same courtesy isn’t always extended when it comes to letting someone go. This disparity highlights a fundamental issue in many organizations: a lack of empathy and transparency in their processes. When terminations happen abruptly, it not only disrupts the lives of individuals but also impacts team dynamics and overall morale. It creates an environment of uncertainty and fear, where employees may feel their own job security is tenuous. Organizations that value their people should strive for open communication and fair processes, ensuring that all transitions—whether hiring or letting go—are handled with respect and dignity. A thoughtful approach can foster a culture of trust and loyalty, making it easier for teams to thrive even in challenging times. The Consequence: When high performers feel undervalued or stagnant, they start looking for new opportunities. This not only reflects their desire for growth but also serves as a wake-up call for organizations. It’s a reminder that recognizing and nurturing talent isn’t just beneficial for the individual; it’s crucial for the organization’s success as well. High performers are often the innovators and leaders within teams, driving results and inspiring others. Losing them can lead to a significant knowledge drain, affecting project continuity and team cohesion. Furthermore, their departure can create a ripple effect, influencing other employees to reconsider their positions and ultimately harming the company’s reputation. Investing in talent development and fostering an environment where employees feel valued can lead to enhanced engagement, creativity, and productivity. Organizations that prioritize their people not only retain top talent but also cultivate a thriving workplace culture that attracts new talent. Let’s prioritize a culture of appreciation and trust, ensuring that our best talent feels valued and engaged. #Leadership #EmployeeEngagement #HighPerformance #CompanyCulture
