Balancing the Benefits of Biofuels/Economics of U.S. Crop-Based Fuel Production: Transportation Energy Institute Report A question considered by the Report is whether crops should be diverted to fuel production at the expense of food production. The Report’s arguments/conclusions include: ➡️Biofuels will be critical to reducing the carbon intensity of liquid fuels, which is necessary to achieve emissions reduction goals from legacy and new vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines. ➡️The expansion of #biofuels in the past has not resulted in an expansion of cultivated acres and has generated significant livestock feed. The Renewable Fuel Standard has reduced carbon emissions by more than 1.2 billion metric tons and the impact on consumer expenditures has been about 1%. ➡️The cost of producing the #feedstocks is not directly a cost of biofuel production, as the commodity price sets the cost of feedstock to the biofuel industry. ➡️The CI of #corn #ethanol related to direct and indirect land use change has been declining over time, as corn yields have increased without corresponding increases in #fertilizer use and as the ethanol conversion process has become more efficient (significant potential to lower the biofuels emissions by adopting climate-smart practices for corn crop production that increase the efficiency of N fertilizer use, reduce use of #fossilenergy, and increase #soilcarbonsequestration). ➡️The impact of the production of corn ethanol on food prices and indirect land use change was more significant in the early years of the #Renewable _Fuel_Standard than in the long run (citing data showing that 37.6% of the corn produced in the U.S. was to produce ethanol and ethanol made up 10.2% of all fuel used in gasoline vehicles in 2022). 📰 Our latest News Review covering updates from across the #biofuels sector is now available. ⛽ In a joint declaration issued after their meeting in Turin, which took place in early May, G7 ministers committed to “promote and facilitate the scale-up of investments” for biofuels in a range of technologies including “sustainable production of energy from waste, sustainable biogases and biofuels.” However, stakeholders maintain that the EU is continuing to hamstring efforts by the European sustainable biofuels industry to contribute to transport de-fossilisation. Specifically, the European Biodiesel Board (EBB) has published a manifesto which details the recommendations of the board for an efficient transition towards carbon-neutral transport. EBB enlisted the following as key factors for an effective, yet quick transition: consistent strategy for biofuels that includes alignment of the EU Taxonomy with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), a fully-fledged integration of biodiesel in the sector’s decarbonisation policies and decisive trade measures against dumping and unfair subsidies as well as enforcement of strict sustainability standards. 🌏 Over in India, following last year’s restrictions on sugarcane juice usage for ethanol production due to rising sugar prices, biofuel-related policy incentives have been on the spotlight again amid elections. Industry sources have mentioned that limited feedstock availability and a shortage of assertive government incentives have posed as fundamental bottlenecks which apparently prevent the industry ‘from operating at full throttle’. To address the challenges faced by the sugar industry and meet the 20% ethanol blending target by 2030, the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has stressed the need for strategic and stable policy interventions as well as promotion of investments on sugarcane production. The price decrease can be attributed to soft fundamentals and easing values in underlying markets, coupled with lacklustre demand for marine biodiesel blends. Despite steady voluntary demand from shipowners seeking sustainability documentation, financial incentives from the expansion of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) into the shipping sector have not significantly stimulated the uptake of marine biodiesel blends. Additionally, pressure on prices in the underlying crude and biodiesel markets has contributed to the situation. Moreover, the article highlights two potential contributing factors in driving buyers away from physically blending advanced biodiesel and discouraging European buyers from advanced products made in China; these are thought to be the low prices for German greenhouse gas (GHG) quota tickets due to weak demand combined with the provisional EU anti-dumping duties on Chinese-origin biodiesel. 📃 International Carbon registry Gold Standard has launched two new methodologies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of shipping operations. These two new methodologies are complementary to the Gold Standard's existing methodologies: ‘Retrofit Energy Efficiency Measures in Shipping’ and ‘Methodology for Emission Reduction by Shore-side or Offshore Electricity Supply System’. 1️⃣ The first of the two newly introduced methodologies, developed by consulting group The FReMCo Group and technology company Daphne Technology, focuses on reducing methane emissions from combustion engine exhaust in both maritime and stationary land-based internal combustion engines that utilize natural gas or other methane-rich fuels.
