Ronnie Screwvala emphasized the potential pitfalls of excessive fundraising in the tech sector. He urged entrepreneurs to prioritize innovation and frugality over immediate capital acquisition. Screwvala’s comments follow Byju's recent financial struggles, underscoring the importance of governance and investor responsibility in startups. Screwvala criticized the tendency of some founders and investors to focus more on raising funds than on ensuring strong financial management and governance. He believes that Byju's issues reflect a broader need for accountability among investors, who should ask critical questions and actively engage in board meetings.Highlighting the positive impact and value creation potential of the edtech sector, Screwvala argued that innovation thrives with prudent financial management. Upgrad, which has raised $365 million in total funding, saw a 96% increase in revenue to Rs 1,194 crore in the financial year ending March 2023, despite an increase in losses. Upgrad is also in advanced talks to acquire US-based online education firm Udacity and aims to raise $100 million, primarily to finance this deal.
