The US company is at the forefront of smart manufacturing in the alternative protein sector, aiming to revolutionize the way we produce food. Ark Biotech is developing advanced biotech infrastructure to support cultivated meat companies in scaling up their operations. Quint and his team have designed bioreactors that are capable of scaling to millions of liters, whereas the biggest bioreactor today is 30,000 liters. At scale, Ark’s bioreactors will be 85% cheaper than the biggest bioreactors today. “We see scale as the biggest single lever to reduce costs. In terms of operational complexity, it’s simple to operate fewer bioreactors because you use the same sensors whether it’s 10 or 10,000 liters. Samples need to be checked and it requires fewer people when you scale up,” says Yossi. “Larger systems offer economies of scale. We’ve also put a lot of effort into ensuring the process is sterile. ***OUR RESEARCH PROJECTS: Optimization of Cell Culture Performance through Vegetable Antifoams*** 🌱 As global meat consumption continues to rise, there's an urgent need to diversify production methods to not only meet this demand but also respect planetary boundaries. Among others cell-cultured foods hold promising potential. However, to make these options economically viable, optimization of their manufacturing processes is crucial. 🔎 One often overlooked challenge in production is foam formation within bioreactors. Foams can impair cell differentiation and growth, thereby reducing both the quality and yield of the product. Choosing and applying the right antifoaming agents is critical to ensure consistent and reproducible high cell density growth. ➡ A research team from Leibniz Universität Hannover & Cultimate will examine plant-based oils as antifoaming agents. Not only are these oils cost-effective and scalable, but they may also enhance cell growth and differentiation—especially in the production of fat cells. Holiferm’s Milestone Achievement 🌟 In February 2023, Holiferm celebrated a major milestone with the opening of their first commercial biosurfactant plant in Wallasey. This pioneering facility—the first of its kind—has the capacity to produce approximately 1,100 tons of biosurfactants annually using Holiferm’s continuous yeast fermentation process combined with their patented integrated gravity separation technology. The plant initially focuses on producing a range of sophorolipids, which have versatile applications in home care, personal care, and agriculture. Holiferm’s ultimate mission is to replace petrochemically derived surfactants with sustainable, bio-based alternatives. BPES have played a key role by facilitating the successful relocation and reinstallation of Holiferm’s 600L pilot-scale fermenter from their bespoke SciTech facility in Daresbury to the new commercial plant. This Solaris Biotech by Donaldson fermenter remains crucial for R&D and scale-up studies on other molecules of interest, including rhamnolipids and MELs. It is set to be recommissioned in summer 2025 to help Holiferm meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions across cleaning, personal care, and industrial processes.
