New Tariffs on $18 Billion of Imports from China. President Biden has announced tariffs on $18 billion of imports from China, including electric vehicles, semiconductors, and medical products. The move aims to protect U.S. workers and companies and address unfair trade practices by China. The administration will also maintain the tariffs imposed by former President Trump on over $300 billion of imports from China. China has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision, stating it goes against the consensus between Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. You can read more about this and the list of new tariffs here. https://lnkd.in/enxP3YSC #icws #internationaltrade #usa #china #ev #semiconductors #medical #internationalrelations

The EU has voted to impose tariffs on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China. Only Ten member states voted in favor of the measure. Germany and four others voted against and 12, including Spain, abstained. Beijing has threatened its own tariffs on European dairy, brandy, pork and automobile sectors. It remains to be seen far this tit-for-tat tariffs extend, and how stagflationary it is for EU, but it is in both parties benefit to find a compromise. "In parallel, the EU and China continue to work hard to explore an alternative solution that would have to be fully WTO-compatible" https://lnkd.in/egFN2csV

EU decided to apply tariffs on EV coming from China. What does it mean? 🔋 You may have come across the news about the recent tariffs that the European Union decided to impose on electric vehicles from Chinese manufacturers last week. The reality is that these tariffs may not be enough to slow down the increasing demand for these vehicles. Here’s a quick recap of the new tariffs for leading Chinese OEMs: - BYD: 17.5%; - Geely Global: 20%; - SAIC: 38%. To put things into perspective, in the United States, these manufacturers are facing tariffs of up to 100%, similar to other Chinese EV 📈 Given the substantial support these OEMs receive from the Chinese government, an average tariff of 25% might seem modest. It's not my intention to take a political position here, but it's clear that this decision was made to avoid tensions with China. Ideally, these manufacturers will invest in Europe in the future, rather than just flooding the market with low-cost products backed by Chinese government subsidies, which have a significantly lower production cost compared to manufacturing in Europe. Still, this will not be a balanced race in which competition will be driven by innovation. And still, with these boundaries, will be difficult to ensure a robust and sustainable automotive industry in Europe. #AutomotiveIndustry #ElectricVehicles #EV

I predicted in the last edition of The GeoCompass that the Biden Administration would impose tariffs of 60-100% on direct imports of Chinese electric vehicles to the USA. I also said that these would be Section 301 tariffs and they could be imposed rapidly and without the need for a long consultation period. This is now reality. #usa #biden #china #tariffs #electricvehicles #politicalrisk #geopoliticalrisk

On July 2, 2024, the Government of Canada formally initiated a 30-day consultation period to evaluate the potential imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. This move indicates the government’s commitment to addressing a series of alleged unfair trade practices and protecting Canadian workers and supply chains. Canadian and global automakers, as well as dealers, suppliers and supply chain partners should strongly consider providing views as part of this consultation to shape the government’s policy and legal response. EU Member States Gave Consent to Anti-Subsidy Tariffs on Electric Vehicles from China. The deadline for the European Commission to finalize definitive anti-subsidy tariff measures on imports of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) from China is fast approaching. While the Commission is the only decision-making body on that matter, EU Member States have the right to either accept or block its proposal. However, they do not have the authority to modify the duty rates proposed by the European Commission, as these rates are directly based on the investigation’s findings, specifically reflecting the subsidy amounts provided by the third country. Last Friday, on October 4th, Member States gave their consent for the Commission to move forward with imposing anti-subsidy tariff measures. The Commission is obligated to finalize the measures within 13 months of launching the investigation. To meet the legal deadlines and to make the measures legally applicable, these must be published in the Official Journal by October 30th. Meanwhile, the Commission ensures to still continue its negotiations with the Chinese government to address concerns. For those curious about how each Member State voted, I’ve below included information shared by Reuters. #Import #Customs #InternationalTrade #Sustainability #Automotive
