Super episode by the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) #oparch team with SAMS faculty Dr. Nicholas Prime. https://lnkd.in/efTdm3KQ Dr. Prime and team connected several dots for me, bringing the ideas of Mahan and Corbett together in a complementary way and reinforcing the accessibility of Wylie's thoughts on strategy. A few quotes that jumped out at me: (1) "You have to look at the tools you have and see how you can apply them to achieve the effects you need. You may have to start with one tool and then swap it for another. Not all the tools you have will be appropriate to what you are trying to do." (2) "The challenge of strategy is matching military outcomes to political expectations." (3) "In applying operational art, you have to look up to strategy as much if not more than you look down to tactical application. We tend to default down." Why I Serve We often use the word 'friend' too loosely. For me, being a friend means knowing where they are in life—understanding both their strengths and weaknesses. A true friend should be concerned about your challenges and know how you're going to handle them when you're struggling or in trouble. As military personnel, we don't usually have friends but 'arty,' even though we use the word carelessly as 'arty' is synonymous with coursemate. We often forget that you can only win a fight or complete a task when you involve not just your coursemates, because no course or commission has it all. Even the lowest-ranking members—private soldiers and their equivalents—can be your 'arty.' Being in the military is a lonely job that requires significant effort and dedication from all rank and file. Your friends or 'arties' are those who support your dreams. For example, as a friend to the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), I want him to succeed. I offer my plans to him, imagining myself in his position with ideas to move the navy forward. I see myself as his 'arty' regardless of the wide rank difference between us. Being CNS is a solitary journey for any current holder of the seat. The real 'arties' are the contemporary foot soldiers who offer their guidance because they live in the current world and have many years of service ahead of them. 🦅

It also extends beyond the length of one’s time in service, as each Sailor, Marine, and Sentinel is expected to maintain the integrity and strength of character developed while in uniform even after transitioning out of service. How does America develop the greatest Sailors, Marines, and Sentinels in the world and how will we continue to do so? We heard from the senior enlisted members of these renowned sea services and learned about the tireless work they undertake to ensure that the quality of our servicemembers remain the envy of the world. The rattlesnake was chosen to symbolize a defensive stance and readiness to strike. Symbolism The Gadsden flag is often associated with libertarian or conservative ideology. It's also used to symbolize individualism, liberty, small government, and distrust of authorities. Military use The phrase "Don't Tread on Me" is also the motto of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the oldest infantry regiment in the US Army. It's also used in the First Navy Jack of the United States Navy.
