There is a lot of advice out there on how to land a job. But there are only 2 ways. 1. You ask for a job. 2. Someone gives you a job For each of these, there are different levers you can pull. For option 1, there are 3 ways you can do this: 1. Applications 2. Networking 3. Professional Brand For option 2, there are 2 ways this happens: 1. From your Network 2. From your Professional Brand As you can see, focusing on networking and building your professional brand allows you to use both options. 90% of people only focus on applications, which is the least effective and doesn't lead to anyone ever reaching out to you about a job. Option A: " I am looking for a new role and I was hoping you could keep an eye out for me. Let me know if you know of anything. It's been 8 months and I am not getting anywhere." Option B: " Hey Anthony, we met at____________. I could use your help. I'm making a career move and I'd love to get 30 minutes of your time next Thursday or Friday. I'd like to catch up, let you know what I have been doing, talk to you about what companies I'd like have a conversation with and see if you can help with any introductions or suggestions. Always happy to see if there is anything I can do for you as well. What works best for you?" Networking for job opportunities can be a game-changer with the right approach. Option A might not be the best strategy as it lacks intentionality. Instead, consider Option B - a more effective way to seek help and support from your network. The people who actually give a damn will spend 30 minutes with you. Those people will help you! 3 harsh truths about the job search ⬇️ The sooner you accept them the faster you’ll be successful. 👉 You need to be proactive Maybe you cringe at the thought of reaching out to your contacts… But you've got to push through the awkwardness and do it anyway. 85% of jobs are filled by networking. Referrals are 4x more likely to be hired. Networking strategically can stratospherically boost your chances of someone seeing your application and landing an offer. 👉 The most experienced candidate doesn’t always get the job offer Experience counts for something, sure. But it’s not enough. You have to get very good at communicating your value and demonstrate how you’re a great culture fit for the company. You have to get the hiring manager on side.
