Australia’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency has reported that the gender pay gap has dropped by 0.6% and employers are taking more action on the drivers of their gaps – but there is still more to do. According to Australia’s Gender Equality Scorecard 2023-24 the new gender pay gap is 21.8%, meaning women earn 78 cents for every dollar men earn – equating to $28,425 less each year. WGEA (Workplace Gender Equality Agency) has announced that today, 19 August, is this year's Equal Pay Day. Equal pay is the concept of women and men being paid the same for performing the same role or different work of equal or comparable value. Closing the gender pay gap is a priority of the Business Council of Australia and the latest data in the Gender Equality Scorecard, showing a narrowing in the pay difference is a step in the right direction. Employers are taking this seriously and the new Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (Setting Gender Equality Targets) Bill 2024 will provide an incentive for greater targets and actions on achieving gender pay equity. There is clearly more to do, and the BCA remains committed in bridging the gap, by assisting more women in senior leadership roles and better pathways into traditionally male-oriented sectors. Ongoing consultation with Government will be key in making sure this Bill assists in closing the gender pay gap and providing better equal opportunity. New results from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency have confirmed that improvements are being made in gender equality, but there is still more to be done in Australian workplaces. “Employers are being held to account on their gender equality performance by employees, prospective employees, investors and the community. Business leaders are being challenged to articulate the drivers of their gap and how they will address it." Mary Wooldridge

International Equal Pay Day is observed annually on September 18 to raise awareness about the gender pay gap and to promote efforts toward achieving equal pay for equal work. Addressing the gender pay gap is essential for achieving gender equality and ensuring fair economic opportunities for all individuals. And Unfortunately Not a single country can close the gender pay gap from their country. This ugly truth still omnipresent in 2024. So, We must navigate challenging and difficult paths fraught with obstacles to achieve gender equality.
