Last week, Max Cameron told me I look too much like a sales person when I wear a blazer and t-shirt. Gearing up for Snowflake's Data Cloud Summit this morning, I donned the blazer again, even though I know it'll scare people away since they often don't want to talk to sales folks. Why? If people are still willing to talk to me even though I look like a scary sales person, I can be more confident that ATLAS is solving a real problem and that we've nailed our messaging. (This is the same thinking underlying Jessica Livingston's advice for early startups to focus on sales, not marketing.) If the conversations fall flat, I can drop the blazer, which makes discovery-style conversations easier since folks won't be too scared to chat. Finding PMF is about operating in these two different modes at conferences and everywhere else.

Last year, when I spoke with partner leaders across the industry, the conversation centered on automation and efficiency - "doing more with less." With shrinking budgets and reduced headcount, everyone was focused on optimizing what they had. But after hosting industry experts from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Palo Alto Networks, Qualtrics, and Databricks at WorkSpan's most recent Ecosystem Business Summit, I'm even more convinced that partnerships in 2025 will thrive by "doing better with different." If 2024 was about making lemonade with lemons - squeezing the most out of limited resources - 2025 is about making lemon cake. With advancements in AI and data integration, we're improving our ingredients and combining them in entirely new ways to create something more valuable. Matt Yanchyshyn, VP of AWS Marketplace & Partner Services, demonstrated use of AI / Data at AWS, moving beyond the traditional "back pocket list" of preferred partners to data-driven recommendations to AWS Sellers, Customers, and Partners.
