DEI: Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion - or is it really Division, Inequality, and Exclusion? Join me and Dr. Alka Sehgal Cuthbert from Don't Divide Us as they expose the truth behind these ideologies infiltrating our schools and the minds of our children. In this eye-opening interview, we explore the mission of Don't Divide Us, an organization founded in response to the rise of critical race theory and divisive ideologies in education. Alka shares her insights on the sudden shift in teaching about race and racism post-2020, the concerns of parents and teachers, and the damaging impact of politicizing education. Don't miss this crucial discussion about the need to separate education from activism and how current trends are affecting our children and democracy. #DEI #Education #CriticalRaceTheory #DontDivideUs

NEW on Wonkhe: Awarding gaps based on ethnicity are a concern, but the way we conceptualise analysing and addressing them are far from perfect. Katharine Hubbard suggests a more nuanced approach https://lnkd.in/e-dnY32v "The awarding gap, as currently constructed, is a flawed and crude tool for addressing racial disparities in HE. Its colonial underpinnings and reliance on outdated racial categories reinforce the very inequalities we aim to dismantle. To make meaningful progress towards racial justice in education, we must critically engage with the metrics we use and adopt more nuanced, inclusive approaches."

In a world where division seems to be the norm, let’s defy the odds and cultivate unity in our classrooms! Despite the chaos outside, our classrooms can be havens of acceptance and understanding. Let’s pledge to create spaces where every student feels valued and respected. While some choose to sow seeds of hate, we’ll be busy nurturing a garden of tolerance and empathy. Let’s teach our students to celebrate diversity rather than fear it. We refuse to normalize bigotry disguised as politics. Instead, let’s amplify voices that champion equality and justice for all. As we approach the ballot box, let’s remember the power of our vote in shaping a more inclusive future. Let’s support parties that prioritize unity over division, inclusivity over exclusion. Kudos to those who recognize that embracing diversity isn’t just morally right—it’s also politically smart. Let’s celebrate progress and continue pushing for a society where everyone has a seat at the table. In a world of polarization, let’s be the beacon of hope, lighting the way towards a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow. Together, we can build bridges instead of walls. Standing firm against discrimination isn’t about finding a middle ground—it’s about standing on the right side of history. Let’s be on the side that fights for justice, equality, and human dignity. Change begins with each of us doing what we can, where we can. Let’s pick up the pieces of progress and build a mosaic of inclusion and acceptance. Together, we’re stronger. Together, we’re unstoppable. #UnityInEducation #BreakTheDivide #InclusiveClassrooms #SafeSpaces #EmpathyEducation #AcceptanceMatters #TeachTolerance #EmbraceDiversity #LoveNotHate #NoToBigotry #EqualityForAll #SocialJustice #VoteForInclusion #ChooseUnity #PowerOfTheBallot https://lnkd.in/efWa_znm

Finally getting around to engaging this book, and quickly finding much that resonates, and inspires: "From where I stand, the protests, the friction, and the institional infighting over how best to fulfill our mission and protect our communities are not signs of sickness. They are signs we are trying." I like this emphasis on *trying* since it allows for times when we will fail but keeps us focussed on the *why* of a university's #mission: "We try to have communities where we are not combatants but colleagues. And although the range of our identities, viewpoints, and educational goals are as wide as the world, our shared identity...as people who try to understand things better" unites our communities and can serve as a "model for life." #universities #highered #civics #dialogue #inclusion

Why should we explicitly talk about race when working to level the playing field? Because, race has **always** mattered in the US, determining how resources and opportunities are distributed. We cannot advance if we ignore race, or fail to include racial justice as an explicit component in our change-making efforts. This type of failure is exactly why our schools continue to be **more** segregated than **before** Brown v. Board of Education was decided. I argue that we are still taking our “deliberate speed” when it comes to integrating our schools, moving so slow that we actually move backwards. While our country rapidly diversities, we must value our differences and integrate them, to finally come closer to representing being members of the same human race. Wither apart or stand united and strong. #racialequity #racialjustice #DEI #educationalleadership #socialjustice #equity

Is the application of #DEI too inconsistent with ideals to work? In this compelling highlight from the Incubate Debate Championship Tournament, student debaters tackle the controversial impact and implementation of #Diversity, #Equity, and #Inclusion programs in educational institutions. Brianna discusses the inconsistent responses to racial issues and questions the true application of DEI ideals. Owen argues that DEI programs should focus on socioeconomic disparities instead of race. Gabriella reflects on the need for reform in DEI programs to address specific cultural, religious, and racial needs. Watch the full debate: https://lnkd.in/eNkrJtbM

Today on Juneteenth, we commemorate the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received news of their freedom in 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. We celebrate this milestone, but remain steadfast in our commitment to the ongoing pursuit of equality in this nation. At Learn Fresh, we work to address systemic challenges where students of color and those from low-income communities face disparities in funding and resources. We believe it's crucial to examine the STEM pipeline through racial and cultural lenses to provide accessible, engaging, and relevant learning opportunities. Together, we can work towards dismantling the inequity that persists across the U.S. public education system. #BlackIndependenceDay #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackLivesMatter #HappyJuneteenth #RacialJustice #Equality #Juneteenth #BLM

This morning’s dropoff. It’s the little things that reflect a stark difference between the kids’ current & previous schools. You’ll understand why I had a cynical chuckle as I wondered what our previous school’s sign might’ve read… “We don’t respect everyone’s differences. Let’s conform together or else we will stand apart.” I am so proud to be public. The change has been incredibly positive. I’m so relieved to have seen the light while the kids are still young. The kids are happy & apart from maybe some fancy (taxpayer funded) facilities the new experience is superior in every way. This includes celebrating diversity & individualism. And I feel more ethical not to be feeding the elitist, segregationist, classist, discriminative, conformist, and in our experience, sexist machine that sustains the inequity in our school system. These types of schools, many of which are private, are not “elite” or “prestigious”, so we need to move away from such language that celebrates & elevates. Such schools are harmful, & damaging to the inclusive, equitable society I thought we were striving for in Australia. Aren’t we? Shouldn’t we be? I love that the school pops these messages around for the kids to see everyday, & I’ve seen that it’s not just talk, but respect & inclusion are a priority in the classroom & the playground. I’d love to hear similar stories from your school experience. So many of the problems we see around us in the world are based on a foundation of intolerance, exclusion, discrimination, disrespect, inequality & privilege. I wonder if we could make the world a better place for everyone over time if we ensured that every school was a safe, respectful, inclusive space where kids could be themselves & we’d just love them for it. #equity #equality #inclusion #kindness #proudtobepublic #schools #education #discrimination #respect #empathy #privilege #safety #culture #sexism #racism #diversity

Social justice can be found in all subject matter. It can be found in science and in math. Look at the different groups of people who have been marginalized and oppressed in every facet of education. Have that as a talking point for your students to research, to come up and create ideas of problem solving. As educators we want our students to be problem solvers and to get to the crux of that, we need to teach them ways of social justice. www.jebehedmunds.com #JebehCulturalConsulting #InclusiveEducation #PositiveChange #MulticulturalEducation #DiverseEducation #Socialjustice #Equality #Equity #Justice
