Think about it - stability and satisfaction. Not mentioning how mastering these skills makes one indispensable in the industry. More high schools should highlight the perks of these roles. Real life stories work wonders. Imagine turning a passion for building into a lifelong career! Balancing professional growth with a fulfilling job isn't just a fantasy; it's a real possibility in welding and boiler mechanics. Encourage dialogue. Random thoughts of a life long welding professional: For a while now, I have listened to so many people complain about the "young people" today. I have heard that they lack skill, drive, work ethic and so much more. And for short time, I kind of agreed. I watched so many young workers run through the shops I worked in and couldn't understand it. So, I was beginning to jump on that train as well. But recent events in my career have given me a renewed view of all of this. I honestly believe that in many ways we are failing the younger generation by not really investing in their success. I started recognizing in my own actions that I wasn't fully committing to their training. I think that I had forgotten that I wasn't born a skilled welder. I was fortunate enough to have had people that taught me the things I needed to know to be good at my trade. Over the years it came easy to me. Then I reached a point where being a great welder wasn't enough. I spent a lot of time studying and learning and asking questions to get the answers that really put me on the path to get to where I am today. I went from being determined that I would not be a welder all my life to having a true passion for the trade and a bigger passion to pass my experience, knowledge and skills on to the next generation. Yet, somewhere along the line, I lost sight of the idea and started settling for just getting them by enough to pass the qualification tests. I have found my way back to wanting to achieve the goals that I set out to achieve so many years ago. I don't want to be the gateway to turning out button pushers and trigger pullers. I want to share my knowledge and experience so I can give the trade that has given me and my family so much over the years, what it deserves. Hungry, skilled and knowledgeable welders that have the ability to fill the vacancies that are all over the place, so they can continue to build the world we live in. Hopefully there are others out there that share in this vision. But, what I would like everyone who reads this to think about is simple; are you really investing in the future generation of your trade, craft or profession? Can you look past the flaws or misconceptions and see the talent and possibilities in the younger people who come before you? Sorry if this seems messy, but after all, I'm just a dumb welder........

Your job isn’t safe. Yes, even in skilled trades. Why? Because the future belongs to the adaptable. Here’s the truth: The world is shifting. Even the most reliable trade jobs are evolving with new technologies, changing demands, and a market that rewards those willing to learn and grow. If you're coasting, you’re falling behind. I’ll tell you a story: A welder I worked with a few years ago—let’s call him Dave—was the best in the shop. Years of experience. Precision like no one else. However, while Dave relied on his trade mastery, others attended courses on automated welding systems and learned new techniques. When a new project came in requiring cutting-edge skills, guess who got the call? Not Dave. The younger, hungrier welders who’d embraced the change were now taking on the high-paying jobs while Dave’s work dried up. The moral? You can’t rely on past successes. Skilled trades are not immune to progress. The trades will always be needed, but how we do them will constantly change. So, what’s your move? Are you updating your skills? Are you building your network? Do you have a mentor who can guide you to the next level? Here’s your challenge: Don’t just be excellent—be adaptable. CCSI's welding program is offered to high school students who are in search of a career path, teaching incoming students curriculum that goes hand-in-hand with the knowledge, skills and abilities that Roeslein looks for in an entry-level structural welder. Every year, former CCSI students at Roeslein & Associates, including our senior quality assurance manager Dan Hemmer, visit this technical school to coach students as they prepare for the Skills USA competition. ▪️Roeslein’s welders provide the students with insights and anecdotes about their experiences and the relationships they've built during their careers ▪️HR manager Amber M. Skilled trades have had long-standing stigmas undermining their value as much needed and viable career choices. A key driver of these stigmatisms is a simple lack of awareness and understanding. People tend to fill in the blanks and come to their own conclusions when information isn’t readily available or exposure is limited. Challenging these misconceptions and promoting education around the benefits of skilled trade careers have done a lot to change the narrative, but there’s still more work to be done. Here are a few ways we can collectively continue to positively influence common misperceptions and encourage everyone to consider fulfilling and rewarding careers in welding and the skilled trades.
