Tempus AI went public one month ago and has maintained its $37 stock price so far, resulting in a $6 billion valuation. Before Tempus, most HealthTech scale-ups experienced disastrous IPOs. I wrote down a few thoughts. 1️⃣ 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 If its #IPO is successful, it could signal a new era for HealthTech IPOs, moving past the "valley of death." Tempus is accelerating a system shift and developing new digital business models. It received the first-ever CPT code for an analysis done entirely by an algorithm (on previously sequenced lab test data). 2️⃣ 𝐢𝐑𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐦𝐬 & 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 So far, iRhythm has had a very successful IPO (+287% stock price increase since launch). IRythm is really a #HealthTech, redefining how cardiac arrhythmias are diagnosed by combining wearable biosensing technology with AI. Hims & Her (+130%), is just a D2C platform for OTC products, focusing on out-of-pocket payments for the worried well. 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 Telehealth, represented by AmWell and Teladoc, has been heavily impacted. Medical appointments need to be unbundled to maximize Tech's value. InsurTech has attracted significant funding. Bright Health went bankrupt, Clover is struggling, while Oscar has rebounded and may still succeed. Genomics companies have faced difficulties. 23andMe lost over 95% of its value, and Sophia Genetics is struggling. Tempus AI appears to be succeeding in precision oncology. Many Digital Therapeutics companies failed (e.g., Better, Pear, Akili). With a market size of $6 billion out of $10 trillion in #healthcare costs, this category is unlikely to be transformative. 4️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜" 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 Pitchbook has recently published a list of HealthTech scale-ups that should go public soon: Omada: Digital health coaching for chronic diseases.
