Why does a personality expert think bullying often goes under the radar?
Dr Stewart Desson says:
1. Poor leadership role modelling.
2. 'Banter' centred organisational culture.
3. The 'lopsided focus' on outcomes over wellbeing.

I'd add: an lack of understanding of HOW to get performance. Some people believe that "shouting at a drowning man will motivate him to swim". Well, maybe. Works well if we enjoy shouting (and don't mind if people drown). Otherwise, we need a more sophisticated understanding of the mechanics of performance (a systems approach), which requires a high level view. Of course, much easier to shout (and watch people twist).
My take on this week
Mental Health Awareness week is a crucial time to reflect on the well-being of individuals, especially in the workplace. It's heartening to see this issue brought to the forefront, but there are concerns about those suffering in silence without proper support. Stress levels, often self-induced, can significantly impact employees. Effective leadership plays a vital role in addressing these challenges.
Having experienced various job environments, I've observed how leadership styles can influence team dynamics and overall success. The approach taken by leaders can shape the work environment profoundly. While some leaders may struggle to manage and support their team effectively, skilled leadership can make a positive difference in fostering a healthy workplace culture.
Overthinking creates problems that don’t exist and usually that’s part of the problem. Remember it’s much more than a job title you have a duty of care not just in work but as a human being.
(This isn’t a dig or anything like that towards anyone it’s merely an observation.)

Consider that abrasive leaders, or workplace bullies, engage in aggressive behavior mainly because they’ve been allowed to by their own boss, even encouraged to through promotions, accolades and increased pay.
Workplace bullying and other negative behaviors can take a toll on the heart of your organization – employees. Employees that are targets or witnesses of workplace bullying can suffer from anxiety, stress, depression and other serious health problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Not to mention, organizations that foster an environment where workplace bullying thrives, have higher turnover rates, lower performance employees, and lower financial success.

Gone are the days when managers were solely taskmasters or productivity enhancers. Today, managers play a significant role in mental health support, having become even more influential than health care professionals such as therapists and doctors and mirroring the influence of spouses and partners.
Trying to balance the needs of many takes a toll on people managers. SHRM's State of Mental Health in the Workplace Research Series revealed:
🔵 46% of people managers feel pressured to prioritize their subordinate’s well-being over their personal well-being.
🔵 40% of people managers said their mental health declined when they entered a managerial or leadership role.
🔵 33% of people managers say their leadership role is not worth the stress that comes with it.
What steps can you take to better support your organization's people managers?

A #toxic#work#environment is characterized by negativity, poor communication, lack of respect, and high stress, leading to low morale and productivity.
How to #Improve It:
1. #Promote Open Communication: Encourage transparency and regular feedback.
2. #Address Conflicts Promptly: Resolve disputes fairly to rebuild trust.
3. #Foster Positivity: Recognize and reward achievements.
4. #Set Clear Expectations: Define roles and responsibilities to reduce confusion.
5. #Provide Support: Offer mental health resources and listen to employees’ concerns.
A #positive#culture starts with #leadership#modeling#respect, #empathy, and #accountability.
A really interesting post, inclusion in the workplace means that employees feel valued, respected, supported, and like they belong. Employees in more inclusive workplaces have improved happiness, well-being, and motivation, which translates to positive business outcomes, like increased productivity.

Reflecting on Leadership and Mental Health at the LEADhership Workshop
I recently had the privilege of attending an inspiring LEADhership workshop hosted by the LeadHership Foundation Foundation at the
American Corner Ongwediva. The workshop covered a wide range of topics, from effective leadership strategies to practical training manuals that can be applied in real-world scenarios.
One thought-provoking question that arose during the workshop was: What is your take when managers or employers say employees should leave their personal problems at home and not bring them to the workplace?
This question touches on a critical aspect of leadership how can managers support the mental health of their teams while maintaining a healthy and productive work environment?
As leaders, it's important to recognize that while it’s not practical to bring every personal issue into the workplace, we must create a space where employees feel supported. Setting realistic boundaries is key. Employees should know that they can seek guidance or mentorship when needed, but not every problem requires an immediate solution from the employer.
In my own experience, I encourage an open-door policy and emphasize the importance of mental health and self-awareness in the workplace. We are all human, and everyone faces challenges whether personal or professional. It’s essential to foster an environment where staff feel comfortable reaching out, whether it's for advice, guidance, or simply to talk.
As leaders, we play a vital role in promoting mental well-being. Offering support, whether through an open conversation or directing them to appropriate resources, can make a significant difference. Counseling and seeking help are crucial steps toward maintaining overall well-being, and it’s something I continuously encourage within my team.
At the end of the day, leadership isn’t just about managing tasks it’s about supporting people in their journey to thrive both inside and outside the workplace.
