Ireland has been something of an outlier in Brussels, with very few correspondents from Irish news outlets based permanently in the EU capital. This is despite the significant policy decisions being made by the European institutions on a daily basis that impact us directly. Our two Europe correspondents from The Irish Times and RTE do trojan work untangling the web of EU policymaking, but they have a serious job of work on their hands with the sheer amount of policy that comes through the Commission, Council and Parliament. In contrast, Denmark has at least 16 Brussels correspondents! This has meant coverage of European policy has often come too late for Irish interests, NGOs and industries to fully participate in the policymaking process. It has also resulted in more limited coverage of the ins-and-outs of new EU policies, the complex and far-reaching Nature Restoration Law being the perfect example. In the run-up to the European elections on the 7th June, we already know that disinformation online will be targeted and unrelenting. It is imperative that we have a strong network of journalists based in Brussels, with intimate knowledge of the workings of the institutions, in order to combat the worst of this. Great news then that the Business Post is sending journalist Sarah Collins out to Brussels as a full-time correspondent. I hope that other newspapers, magazines, television and radio outlets now follow suit. Put simply, if Ireland doesn't understand the European Union fully, we won't be in a position to reap all the rewards of EU membership or take an active role in steering the EU's course in the years to come.
