I love this post from Melissa Perri! Product Operations has firmly established itself as a critical discipline within larger Product Organizations. As someone actively shaping and evolving this function, 2024 provided numerous opportunities for growth and reflection. Here are three key insights I’ve gained over the past year: 1) Beyond Execution: Product Ops is not just about "getting stuff done." It’s the team that maintains focus on the big picture, ensuring the Product Organization stays aligned with its strategic objectives and achieves them in the most effective way possible. 2) Adaptability is Essential: As companies evolve, so too must Product Ops. The needs of the organization can shift significantly from year to year, requiring these teams to demonstrate flexibility and bring diverse skill sets to the table. 3) Leadership Must Evolve: Leading a newly formed Product Ops team demands different skills than running a mature and established one. “What is Product Operations anyway?” I’m so glad you asked!! ☺️ Product Operations (ProdOps) is a relatively new but increasingly vital function within modernized tech organizations. We are a bridge between product management, engineering, and other teams, ensuring seamless collaboration, alignment, and scalability. We focus on process improvement, standardization of documentation, team development, stakeholder engagement planning, and operational readiness. So, what does a Product Operations team actually do (the cliff notes)? ✔️ Process Improvement and Standardization: We focus on streamlining workflows, creating efficient processes, and standardizing documentation to ensure consistency and clarity. Provide “guardrails” for teams to help streamline and improve workflows across business functions. ✔️ Team Development: We foster a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within our teams. Review team skill levels and identify opportunities to bridge any gaps. ✔️ Stakeholder Engagement Execution: Engage with stakeholders via technology and events to better understand their needs and improve communication streams. ✔️Operational Readiness: We partner with Go-To-Market, Implementation and Support arms of our Operations teams to ensure that our products are prepared for launch and ongoing operations, minimizing risks, maximizing success, and ensuring solid customer experiences. Over the past two months, I've been asked numerous times what I least like about Product Operations. An interesting question that I rarely get asked... While there's truly nothing I inherently dislike about this discipline (#1 fan of prod ops), a recurring challenge I notice is the lack of understanding within organizations regarding the true value and scope of Product Ops. To address this, I've made it a priority to educate folks about the strategic role of Product Ops in driving product success. However, I've realized that education alone is not enough. Several other factors contribute to these challenges..... Misaligned expectations - Learning to proactively set clear expectations with stakeholders about the scope of the role and realistic deliverables, given available resources, can help stakeholders better understand the reality. Limited resources - To maximize impact despite limited resources, focusing on prioritizing high-impact initiatives and building strong relationships with cross-functional teams could help achieve faster and stronger results. Organizational silos - By fostering open communication and collaboration, it's important to break down silos and ensure that Product Ops is integrated into broader organizational processes and decision-making. By actively addressing these challenges, in addition to education, you can successfully demonstrate the value of Product Ops as a strategic partner that drives product success. As Product Ops keeps growing, I'm all about highlighting its value and helping organizations make the most of it.
