This is a very insightful take on the state of silicon photonics, and I appreciate the thorough analysis. Silicon photonics truly stands at an interesting crossroad between the microelectronics and integrated photonics worlds. From the microelectronics perspective, silicon photonics is viewed as a natural extension of the silicon-based ecosystem. By bringing optical communication to the chip level, it's addressing critical bandwidth and energy-efficiency challenges, which is vital as AI and machine learning workloads continue to scale. Leaders in the semiconductor space are wise to see this as a driver for the next growth cycle, particularly as it addresses the limitations of traditional electrical interconnects. However, I completely agree that the path to standardization may be more straightforward here compared to the integrated photonics world. The existing CMOS infrastructure and ecosystem favor a consolidation around a few dominant players, which could bring about faster adoption and economies of scale. On the other hand, the integrated photonics world is a bit more fragmented. The range of applications and the need for different functionalities (such as lasers, modulators, and detectors made from various materials) make heterogenous integration not just a trend but a necessity. This creates both an opportunity and a challenge: the opportunity to customize solutions for specific applications, but also the challenge of a lack of standardization and the difficulty of achieving volume production. It’s a bit of a paradox—the same flexibility that makes integrated photonics attractive is what may prevent it from consolidating as quickly as the microelectronics approach. Overall, it seems we're witnessing a dual evolution. While silicon photonics in the microelectronics space could consolidate around a few major players, the integrated photonics world might take longer to settle, driven by niche applications and the exploration of novel materials. But perhaps, in the long run, even this space will see consolidation as certain applications outpace others in growth and demand. It’s an exciting time for the field, with a lot of potential for innovation.

How is silicon photonics perceived today by the microelectronics and integrated photonics world🌎?  For the microelectronics world, #siliconphotonics brings another form of silicon-enabled functionality. Packaging/combining silicon-based optoelectronic functionality with existing silicon functions such as logic, high-bandwidth memory, and other speciality features to develop high-performance solutions for AI. Some leaders of the semiconductor world believe that the previous growth of the microelectronics industry resulted from IoT. They expect the next growth cycle, which will make the semiconductor industry touch the mark of one trillion dollars, will rely on AI, where silicon photonics is mandatory to solve the so-called computational bottleneck energy-efficiently. The figure on the left draws inspiration from a roadmap shown by a major CMOS foundry. The picture describes how the advances in silicon optoelectronics, packaging and fibre count could provide the bandwidth growth necessary to overcome the computational bottleneck. With this clear agenda, I would guess that the #siliconphotonics of the CMOS world will quickly consolidate/standardize. It will be the dominant volume driver as well with the demand met by only a few major foundries. The picture on the left shows silicon photonics from the lens of the integrated photonics world. The silicon-based photonic layer carries many other materials (some more exotic than others). Heterogenous integration is becoming popular for adding new materials with the baseline silicon photonics. Firms are mixing and matching materials to develop the best solution possible. Furthermore, the growing range of potential applications also demands either heterogeneous integration or an altogether new PIC technology platform. I would argue that any sort of standardization seems complicated for the silicon photonics of the integrated photonics world. The volumes will be distributed over several flavours before a shake-off takes place. 

🚀 Edge Computing: Powering the Future at the Network's Edge 🌐 In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, edge computing stands at the forefront, transforming how data is processed and utilized. By bringing computation closer to data sources, edge computing reduces latency, enhances real-time decision-making, and alleviates network congestion. The optical and photonics sectors continue to impress with big technological leaps forward. New materials and tighter integration between electrical and optical systems are enabling ever-smaller features and this constant miniaturization is boosting performance while shrinking power - a huge advantage for those who are looking to harness the technologies for compute or datacom. These are very important applications. Yet as someone who is highly curious about "wearable tech" and human-machine interfaces, there was news today that truly excited me! A company called Imagia has come out of stealth mode and boasts a metasurface that enables what they call 'processing optics'. They've developed a silicon metasurface with lenses and filters that can offload certain computing tasks that would normally be handled by CPUs or AI accelerators - functions like gesture recognition, face detection, and perhaps even depth sensing. Since these materials are passive, using this approach can save processor power and reduce the overall size of the system which could lead to more streamlined wearables that have better form factors, longer battery life, and greater overall utility. I believe breakthroughs like this will enable human-machine integration to advance in leaps and bounds and can envision a world where we have head-worn devices with all compute power and connectivity of a smartphone, in the form factor of eyeglasses. This has many applications for day-to-day convenience, but will ALSO be an enabler for workers who need to stay safe and alert while being connected, people with disabilities, etc. In other words, a HUGE augmentation of human potential is coming soon!
