𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚? I know what you might be thinking... "I'm more concerned with action than philosophy, with doing than thinking. Philosophy is for academics, we need outcomes and solutions." Or maybe you're even saying, "Why would I need a philosophy of the future - what I need is strategy in the present." In reality, not only does the way you think about the future directly impact the actions you take today, but 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆. So, what is the basis of your foresight practice, your view of the future, your vision of foresight's scope, attributes, purpose, and even its very locus - the place from which foresight originates, the origin from which it derives, and its connection to a larger cosmovision of life in totality (i.e. people, kin, planet, biome, etc.) Your philosophy of the future - and we all have one, whether consciously or unconsciously - directs your approach to organizational development, governance, society, education, wellbeing, ancestral dreams, generational visions, what we all become... together. In other words, 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙮 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 "𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙨." If you think that our present philosophy of foresight is just fine, then what I'm saying isn't for you. There has been discussion on how to measure the effects of a foresight intervention. (And whether it can be done in a meaningful way.) Today I got occupied by the idea that some organization is "ahead" in foresight compared to another organization. What could this mean? They have more concrete outcomes? Better tools and capacities? More scenarios? They think further in time? Unfortunately, the meaning sometimes seems to be that they have more things that work here and now. I do not believe that foresight with integrity can use that as a metric. Foresight is not some hocus-pocus that can be used whenever we need to come up with an idea quickly.

Not only can one anticipate the future, but also actively shape it with personal foresight! Anticipating, creating, and planning for future events or outcomes is the essence of foresight. According to Smart (2021), the main advantage of foresight thinking for each individual, group, and society is that it helps us see more clearly what should, could, and will occur. According to Peter Bishop, foresight is everything we do before strategic planning; therefore, all professionals working in foresight aspiring to become both strategic and adaptive for themselves and with their clients must have a foundational understanding of the four knowledge and practice domains—personal, organizational, global, and universal. Slaughter (2005) asserts that the results of good foresight work prompt us to consider what we might need to do, bringing us to our strategy. What will we do? Moreover, how are we going to accomplish it? However, mastering the art of foresight begins with better predicting, creating, and leading our future. Smart (2021) also highlights that developing personal foresight involves understanding our deeper motivations and values, recognizing patterns and behaviors, exploring future scenarios, aligning actions meaningfully, and cultivating foresight skills in daily life. Whispers of Insight Diary Entry - December 26, 2024 Progress is often seen as a destination, a point we aim to reach. But today, I found myself thinking: What if progress is less about where we’re going and more about how we’re changing along the way? We often think of progress as linear—a straight path of achievements and milestones. But in reality, it’s messy, unpredictable, and, more often than not, humbling. Progress isn’t just about moving forward; it’s about learning to navigate setbacks, finding meaning in pauses, and redefining goals when circumstances change. I was reminded of this during a recent conversation with a couple of friends. They spoke about how a year that seemed "stagnant" on paper was actually one of their most transformative. They hadn’t achieved the goals they set in January, but they’d grown in ways they couldn’t have predicted—developing resilience, deepening relationships, and gaining clarity about what really matters. It hit me that we need to celebrate not just our wins but the lessons learned in what might appear to be losses. Those lessons, after all, often lay the foundation for breakthroughs we can’t yet see. So, as we inch closer to the end of 2024, I encourage you to reflect: What’s one lesson from this year that has quietly shaped your progress, even if it didn’t come with a trophy or a headline? Progress isn’t a straight line—it’s a story. Let’s honor every chapter. ✨At no point in time are we powerless to the future.✨ Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking to 300 young minds at Debate Day in BIZ Vienna. The energy in the room was electrifying, and my message was clear: The best way to predict the future is to create it. In a world where we are often overwhelmed by bad news and uncertainty, it’s easy to feel like we’re powerless. But the truth is—we are not. 💡The future isn’t set in stone. It’s not something to fear, but something to shape. And what do we need to build the future we want? 21st-century skills: ⭑Critical Thinking ⭑Creativity ⭑Collaboration ⭑Communication The question I’ve been asking for over 10 years at the beginning of my Future Workshops —“Wouldn’t it be great if we could predict the future?”—has seen a shift. Now, young people often say, “No, we don’t want to know.” Is it because we lack curiosity? Not at all. Like babies exploring the world with fearless curiosity, we too can embrace the unknown. We resist looking ahead because we project negativity onto the future. We feel powerless, bombarded by the media, politics, and social channels that tell us what's wrong but never offer solutions. But here’s the exciting part—we can’t predict the future because it isn’t decided yet! Which means we have the power to actively shape it, every single day.
