Last week, the IDC public sector team presented broader market trends to one of the leading #Automation vendors in the region. Although we discussed numerous areas, one of the most critical themes was the country government's investment in #DigitalInfrastructure to support automation and e-governance. Upon closer analysis, scaling #DigitalTransformation initiatives has started demonstrating far-reaching social impacts beyond what one might imagine. However, a critical roadblock to these initiatives is the growing complexity arising from #Legacy applications due to their #Monolithic and disparate nature. Additionally, concerns about #TechnicalDebt accumulation have reduced the scope of integration and enhancements that can be implemented on top of legacy applications. This significantly limits the pace of #Innovation for government organizations. As a result, #ApplicationModernization continues to climb in priority within IT for government organizations, with some progressing faster than others in their modernization plans. IDC's findings from various surveys highlight the following: 73% of Asia/Pacific public sector organizations (including the government sector) consider application modernization a strategic priority. 65% of public sector organizations are in the initial phase of their application modernization journey and have yet to scale modernization initiatives beyond certain business functions. Almost half of public sector organizations are innovating on top of legacy applications and missing out on true application innovation. Moreover, when we analyzed the major priorities for government executives in the Asia Pacific region, these priorities largely revolved around growth & productivity, citizen services satisfaction, faster innovation, and risk reduction. All of these can be achieved and enhanced through the long-awaited modernization of digital infrastructure. After all, the #Pandemic was a wake-up call for the world, including country governments!
