📑 General consent for medical research📑 New publication looking at hospital patients view on consent for medical research finds that a move toward a general consent, without limitation to specific research purposes, may better comply with patients’ wishes and maximize research potential. "Biological material and health information from patients are valuable for medical research. Under a “broad” consent model, hospital patients in Norway can consent to their biological material and health information being stored in research biobanks and used for “specific, broadly defined research purposes” within a specified medical research area but not for medical research in general. Patients are asked to provide new consent each time researchers wish to use their material in a different medical research area. This study investigated patient representatives’ views on having a general consent for medical research without limitation to specific research purposes. We also investigated preferences for the storage of biological samples, the process of consent collection, and factors motivating or hindering consent." https://lnkd.in/d_89UE6s

"Giant study finds untrustworthy trials pollute gold-standard medical reviews" 😠!!! (see https://lnkd.in/es_AgWuZ) In my first draft submission of 'The legacy of the #reproducibility crisis' to Nature Reviews Psychology (see https://lnkd.in/e2eWAgZJ), I included the following text when referring to reproducibility crisis and the prevalence of sub-par research in the broader literature: "What worries me most is how analogous this [the reproducibility crisis and unreliable studies] is to the 2008 housing market bubble where sub-prime mortgages were irresponsibly ‘re-packaged’ with better ratings to give a sense of higher quality, which eventually led to the financial crash. If ~85% of research studies are of sub-prime quality (ie not reproducible), I sincerely believe we are at risk of ‘academic rot’ spreading throughout the literature, and I dread to think of the dire consequences of an ‘academia crash’." I was asked to remove it as it was thought to be a bit 'inflammatory/hyperbolic' and beyond the scope. Well...this recent article from Nature Portfolio outlines a giant study (see https://lnkd.in/er35nfXP; NB. not yet peer-reviewed) which seems to support my analogy...that fake/flawed research is polluting the literature (being 'packaged' into systematic reviews etc). It INFURIATES me that this is the case. How can we ask the general public/society to trust our findings, if we can't even trust ourselves. It's even worse that this is happening in the medical science field - where results are literally applied to 'life & death' situations. It falls on EVERYONE in the research ecosystem to uphold and defend #ResearchIntegrity...academics, institutions, funders, publishers, policymakers...the stakes are just TOO high. #OpenScience UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) AAAS UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN) Marcus Munafò Dorothy Bishop Samuel Westwood, PhD Center for Open Science Health Research Authority Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency FDA
