The 3-Stage Process That Makes Universities Prime Innovators Cross-sector collaborations, combining the competencies, skills, and resources of diverse actors, are increasingly seen by #academics and professionals alike as the best way to tackle complex societal and environmental issues — and universities are becoming key players in these collaborations. While calls for cross-sector collaborations to tackle complex societal issues abound, in practice, only few succeed. Those that do often have a collaboration intermediary, which can bring together different actors, develop #relationships among #collaborators, and create an ecosystem to support #ideas over time. With their strengths in #knowledge creation and their role as community anchors, #universities are ideally equipped to create and orchestrate support for the kind of innovation that the sustainability imperative requires. However, to be able to take on this role they need to develop a culture of open innovation, experimentation and iteration, and value, which requires supporting teams that will champion the change and facilitate #collaborations among the diverse actors of the #innovation #ecosystem.

🌏Could a Kiwi 'Tech Hub Abroad' Transform New Zealand’s Research Potential? 💡 Imperial College London’s move to open a science and tech hub in California sets a new standard for cross-continental collaboration. This hub in San Francisco aims to "supercharge" partnerships between British and American innovators, creating a platform for convergence science that addresses pressing global challenges. It’s a powerful model – and one that New Zealand could consider replicating. 🌱Imagine this: a New Zealand university hub in a global tech hotspot, allowing Kiwi researchers and startups to collaborate directly with top-tier talent and tech resources abroad. Such a facility could bridge our geographic isolation, opening doors to international partnerships that would otherwise require frequent travel – a high carbon cost for universities committed to achieving net zero. A centrally located tech hub would enable researchers to work alongside and learn from global peers without leaving New Zealand soil as often. They could even teach back to their NZ classrooms remotely, integrating international insights in real time. This model could be particularly strategic for New Zealand if placed in Europe, creating a front door for Horizon Europe or similar research partnerships that demand close, sustained collaboration. 📊 #MetricsForImpact: How Can We Measure the #Innovation Capacity of US Regions? A region’s capability to innovate—be it a state, county, Metropolitan statistical area (MSA), or city—is defined by its ability to create an environment where talent, knowledge, and capital converge to develop and implement new ideas, technologies, or processes that drive economic growth and improve its competitiveness. These are five critical metrics that we use at Punto Labs to analyze the regional innovation capacity (and there are more): 🎓 University-Led Research & Development (R&D): Regions with strong university-led R&D ecosystems anchor innovation clusters, attracting businesses seeking cutting-edge research and a skilled workforce. According to the Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) by the National Science Foundation (NSF), in 2022, US universities spent $97.8 billion on R&D. California ($12.1B), New York ($8.3B), and Texas ($7.4B) led the nation in higher education investments, reinforcing their roles as innovation hubs. 💼 Private-Led R&D: Regions with a high concentration of business-performed R&D often focus on translating research into practical applications and marketable products. In the U.S., the business sector is the largest performer of R&D, totaling $691.5 billion in 2022. MSAs like San Jose ($105.2B), San Francisco ($76.8B), and Seattle ($55.0B) are prime examples, leading the way in turning research into marketable products. 🚀 Startups and Small Business Innovation: Successful regions that secure funding through government programs like the NSF’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) correlate strongly with technology-based economic development. According to SSTI, the MSAs averaging the most SBIR awards per year between 2013 and 2017 were Boston (528 awards per year), Los Angeles (401 awards per year), and Washington D.C. (316 awards per year). 🎓Highly skilled talent pipeline: Regions with strong STEM talent pipelines gain a competitive edge in fostering innovation and supporting emerging technologies. For instance, in 2022/2023, the U.S. graduated over 7,000 general engineers, with Washington (551), Boston (319), and New York (305) as the top MSAs. 💡 Patent Activity and Knowledge Creation: Although patents are typically regarded as outputs, the OECD recognizes that a deeper understanding of innovation necessarily requires learning more about patents. According to the USPTO, regions with high patenting activity typically have strong innovation infrastructure or supportive policies. In 2023, the USPTO granted over 156,000 patents to U.S. residents, with California (45,000), Texas (12,000), and Massachusetts (8,000) leading the rankings. 💬 What other indicators do you consider essential for measuring regional innovation capacity? Can universities play a more central role in shaping innovation ecosystems? Over the past many years I have been involved in many initiatives, where universities individually or in consortia with nearby universities and other partners have tried to accelerate innovation & entrepreneurship. Just recently I find myself deeply involved in UNITE, which already has created substantial momentum in the German capital region. Hence, there is good reason to answer the introductory question with a firm YES. But what can be expected from universities taking upon such a keystone role, and how will this impact the ecosystems? These are some of the questions we tackle in our now available paper in Academy of Management Perspectives. When universities embark on such an exciting endeavor, this comes with specific leadership demands and involves government commitment - just to mention some of the recommendations we put forward in our paper.
