😱 Interesting study. Some disheartening results... 🤔 Apparently reading grant proposals does not have much influence on who gets funding or not compared to just reading abstracts... It might be country-specific as different agencies have different procedures. Nonetheless: ❔Is the money we spend on evaluation procedures, including hordes of paid external reviewers and extended panels worth it? https://lnkd.in/di-QSmU3

For Times Higher Education, I reacted to the shift to lumpsum funding for European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grants. I highlighted that this new funding model must allow for flexibility in the conduct of frontier research. The ambition of reducing administrative burdens should not dissuade researchers from exploring the unknown. I also re-asserted the crucial importance of safeguarding the autonomy of the scientific council of the ERC, including in deciding whether and how the lumpsum funding model should be further rolled-out for future ERC grants. Position of The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities on lumpsum funding (January 2022): https://lnkd.in/eaVUV6be https://lnkd.in/ecy5kjV5

HOW TO GET YOUR RESEARCH INTO THE JOURNALS! SI offers this two day PhD-course on ”Getting My Research into Journals," 13-14 January 2025. The course is taught by SI Professors Keld Laursen and Peter Maskell, both of whom are extremely well published, highly cited and hold ample editorial experience. The course is aimed at Phd students, post-docs and others who have recently embarked on an academic career. The course addresses the basic issues of academic publishing and covers the whole process from your research idea to submission of your quantitative or qualitative paper to a scientific journal. It mixes lectures with hands-on exercises and testimonials from PhDs sharing their recent publishing experience. The course includes sessions on how to select your target journal, how to structure your paper and position it in your field, how to manage co-authorships and deal with reviewer reports and how editors make their final decision on which paper submissions to accept for publication in their journal and which to reject (an Editors' Round-Table is included). https://lnkd.in/dRgF98dq

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟭 Here is how you can ensure the accuracy of academic studies and sources to verify their reliability and credibility. 𝟭. 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 Prefer studies published in peer-reviewed journals, as these have undergone rigorous evaluation by experts in the field. Consider sources from well-known academic publishers and institutions, as they are more likely to maintain high standards. Check the qualifications and affiliations of the authors. They should have relevant expertise and credentials in the subject matter. Review the authors’ previous work and their reputation within the academic community. 𝟮. 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆’𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 Evaluate whether the research design is suitable for the study’s objectives. Common designs include experimental, observational, and qualitative studies. Check the sampling methods used. The sample should be representative of the population being studied. Review the methods of data collection and analysis to ensure they are appropriate and well-documented. The study should provide detailed descriptions of how data was collected, measured, and analyzed. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 Potential Biases: Investigate the funding sources of the study. Be cautious of potential conflicts of interest that may influence the study’s findings. Look for any signs of bias in the study’s design, methodology, or interpretation of results. Ensure that the study discloses any potential conflicts of interest or affiliations that could affect the research outcomes.

[Article] A review of work-integrated learning for PhD students Work-integrated learning (WIL) has been suggested as a potentially beneficial addition to modern doctoral education. However, there is little research outlining the specificities of WIL aimed at PhD students. This paper explores the range of WIL opportunities available to PhD students through a review of secondary data. ✍️B. KRISTIN, S. IRENE, C.
