Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP)’s Post

While MHQP and the The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) have been monitoring the health of #primarycare in the Commonwealth through the Massachusetts Primary Care Dashboard, the Milbank Memorial Fund and the The Physicians Foundation have been tracking key metrics of primary care performance nationwide though the national Primary Care Scorecard. Here are some of the alarming facts revealed in the 2025 Primary Care Scorecard released today, showing how underinvestment in primary care Is failing US patients: 🌟 Primary care accounts for less than 5% of total US health spending and our fee-for-service payment system doesn’t reward primary care. Average reimbursement for a primary care visit is one-fifth of reimbursement for a gastroenterology visit. 🌟 The percentage of nurse practitioners and physician assistants in primary care has dipped to new lows. 🌟 Fewer new primary care physicians are entering the workforce in states with more GME funding. 🌟 Only 24.4% of new physicians entered primary care, marking the lowest rate in a decade.
