Combatting Double Brokering & Freight Piracy. In today's freight industry, vigilance is key. I recently encountered a double broker situation. The carrier I booked with turned out to be a scam. They took the shipment and promised another driver $1,000 more than the agreed rate. Not only did they use another trucking company's MC, but they also obtained their email, DOT number, and even insurance information. Fortunately, our customer was alerted to confirm if we were the actual brokers picking up the shipment. Please be aware; I know it may seem like an extra mile, but check MC numbers, match the area code. CYA (Cover Your A**). The legislation would require brokers to designate a principal place of business and disclose any relationships with other carriers, forwarders, or brokers within the past three years.
