North America Known As Turtle Island To Indigenous Tribes Believe it or not, it is under your feet if you are living in North America and walking on Mother Earth. Many Native American tribes have this believe and have it in their folklore stories. One reason is the continent’s shape. The North American area has the shape of the turtle’s shell with a spiny ridge, the Rocky Mountains. Protruding from the shell are the tail of Mesoamerica; the limbs of Florida, Baja California, Alaska and Quebec-Labrador; and the head pointing toward the North Pole. The continent also has 13 regions that correspond to the 13 plates that are on turtle’s shell.

𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆: Charles Sturt is one of the most renowned explorers in the early history of Australia. Sturt was able to establish that the Murrumbidgee and Darling rivers flowed into a much larger river, which he named the Murray River, which flowed west into the Southern Ocean. On this day in 1541, the Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, in a letter to the king of Spain, became the first man to describe the vast Llano Estacado. The Llano Estacado (Staked Plains), the southern extension of the High Plains of North America, is a high mesa lying south of the Canadian River in northwest Texas and northeast New Mexico. Coronado had been appointed in 1540 to lead an expedition to the Seven Cities of Cíbola, wondrous tales of which had been brought to Mexico by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. Coronado found no gold at Cíbola, in western New Mexico, but he was led on by stories of Quivira, a region far to the east. It was during his search for Quivira that Coronado came upon the Llano Estacado, which he described thus: "I reached some plains so vast, that I did not find their limit anywhere I went, although I traveled over them for more than 300 leagues ... with no more land marks than if we had been swallowed up by the sea .... [T]here was not a stone, nor bit of rising ground, nor a tree, nor a shrub, nor anything to go by." Future explorers echoed his impressions of the region, and development did not begin until the 1870s, though it proceeded rapidly thereafter. Indeed, the Llano witnessed the most rapid development of any section of the state, progressing from an economy based on unfenced public grazing land to a modern industrial economy within half a century. Further to my earlier post about worldviews to re-think our behavior systems and structures. I offer another beautiful input to your imagination from our weekly team meeting. This week Sarah Cuddie hosted and shared this piece from “The Serviceberry” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The Honourable Harvest she references is a core part of the Dish with One Spoon Treaty (Treaty 13 - Turtle Island - Canada). “The guidelines of the Honorable Harvest are not usually written down, they are reinforced in small acts of daily life. But if I were to list them they would look something like this: Know the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you can take care of them. Introduce yourself. Be accountable as the one who comes asking for life. Ask permission before taking. Abide by the answer. Never take the first one. Never take the last. Take only what you need. Take only that which is given. Never take more than half. Leave some for others. Harvest in a way that minimizes harm. Use it respectfully. Never waste what you have taken. Share. Give thanks for what you have been given. Give a gift in reciprocity for what you have taken. This Haitian proverb translates to “𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀.” The reality of life is that once we overcome an obstacle there’s always another obstacle in our path. Even when we achieve something great there’s always more work to be done. Sisyphus pushed a rock up a hill over and over again just to have it roll down the other side. Our lives aren’t any different. Words shape how we see the water between islands. Japanese fishermen call it 多島海 (tatoukai) when the islands dot the waves like stars. They say 群島 (guntou) when islands huddle close, 列島 (rettou) when they trail like footsteps across the sea, and 諸島 (shotou) when describing their differences.
