The French procurement agency (Direction Générale de l’ Armement, DGA) has awarded a contract to support the development of the KATANA® guided ammunition, which was initiated by KNDS France. KATANA® meets the pressant need for high-precision artillery ammunition in both low and high intensity warfare: its performance limits collateral damage in urban areas and enables dealing more effectively with high value targets such as artillery systems, radars or command posts. The modular design of KATANA® means that it can evolve to integrate new technologies as soon as they are available on the market (particularly for use in GNSS denied environments). Its modularity also means that local components can be integrated as part of a production transfer, making it easy to export. The KATANA® guided ammunition has unrivalled in Europe accuracy and target neutralization capacities. KNDS France is thus expanding its product range and becoming one of the few manufacturers to master all existing types of artillery ammunition. The KATANA 155mm guided artillery ammunition is a priority program of the Nexter Group that meets the needs of modern artillery and is compatible with all types of 155mm guns of the JBMoU (Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding) standard. With a maximum range between 30 km for the first generation and 60 km for the next, KATANA will strike targets with pinpoint precision. The projectile’s guidance is ensured by a hybridisation between a GNSS signal receiver and an inertial measurement unit. The KATANA shells will offer the best performance in range, accuracy and terminal effect for existing 155 mm munitions, while retaining the traditional artillery qualities: continuous fire, all-weather capability, high cost/efficiency ratio. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gTK8VzMy

#Ukraine's military has significantly narrowed the gap in ammunition usage between its forces and Russian invaders, according to Ukraine’s top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, in an interview with CNN. During the interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, she highlighted the disparity on the battlefield between Ukrainian and Russian forces. Amanpour noted that Russia has superior capabilities in drones, missiles, and artillery. "How do you assess the difference between what you have and what they have? And how do you compensate for that difference?" Amanpour asked Syrskyi. Syrskyi acknowledged Russia's advantage in aviation, missiles, artillery, manpower, tanks, and infantry fighting vehicles, as well as in the amount of ammunition they use. "But this also motivates us," Syrskyi responded. "We can’t fight the way they do, so we have to use the most effective approach, applying our forces and resources with maximum use of terrain, engineering structures, and taking advantage of our technical superiority." He explained that Ukraine compensates for its resource gap by using drone systems, constantly working to improve their efficiency, effectiveness, and command structure, as well as refining methods and tactics of their use. “We’ve created the world’s first branch of the military solely dedicated to drone systems. We’ve established command, units, regiments, and battalions, which are now proving their effectiveness on various frontlines. Our best drone units are concentrated in the Pokrovske area," Syrskyi said. Additionally, Ukrainian forces have managed to close the gap in ammunition usage. “The ratio is now roughly one to two, or one to two and a half. A year ago, it was one to ten, one to six,” Syrskyi noted. https://lnkd.in/d9kSiYwF

The three most important things in warfare: Logistics, logistics, and logistics. The side that runs out of ammunition first - loses. “While Ukraine registered an operational demand for 250,000 artillery rounds per month in the lead-up, they were limited to approximately 90,000 artillery rounds per month at the height of the counteroffensive.” “The number of domestic drone manufacturers has grown from seven to over 300 within the last eighteen months to keep pace with the Ukrainian armed forces’ consumption of over 10,000 unmanned platforms per month. However, production capacity takes time.” https://lnkd.in/dhSZikVx

The Spanish Army has signed a framework agreement with Rheinmetall to supply around half a million modular propellant systems for 155mm extended-range artillery ammunition. The order is worth up to €205 million and is scheduled for delivery from mid-2024 to the end of 2025. It was booked in July 2024. The order includes an extension option for a further two years, which could significantly increase its value. Against the backdrop of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Spanish army also intends to replenish its ammunition stocks. In this context, the procurement of propellant charge systems for the M109 and SIAC 155mm calibre howitzers is taking place. The current contract signing is one of several orders placed by the Spanish army this year. In April 2024, Rheinmetall announced that the Group had received an order to supply mortar shells in the high double-digit million euro range. In March 2024, Rheinmetall received an order to supply 155mm artillery ammunition worth over €200 million by the end of 2025. Rheinmetall is one of the world's leading manufacturers of large-calibre ammunition and propellant systems. In modern artillery, projectiles and propelling charges are loaded separately in order to achieve different ranges. https://lnkd.in/e3vA-aTr #Rheinmetall

American defense giant Northrop Grumman will launch ammunition production in Ukraine. The American defense corporation Northrop Grumman plans to create production facilities for medium-caliber ammunition in Ukraine. This results from a state-funded Ukrainian government project and approval from the US government. Medium caliber ammunition is standard for many combat vehicles and anti-aircraft anti-drone systems. These projectiles can be manufactured in different versions including armor-piercing and high-explosive fragmentation with programmed detonation. The company also announced its plans to expand the production of medium calibers and start production of tank and 155-mm artillery ammunition. It is emphasized that the Ukrainian government is currently investing $2B in the defense industry, which has become a key factor for Northrop Grumman. Northrop Grumman is the world's third-largest defense company in terms of revenue, with about $32.5B annually. https://lnkd.in/dVhd2b2c
