Community-based organizations (CBOs) are often the best option for providing critical services to diverse communities in California, yet they frequently encounter obstacles to securing state contracts or grants that could support their mission. We’re excited to share ChangeLab Solutions’ new issue brief Unlocking California State Funding for Community-Based Organizations to Advance Health Equity, which highlights situations that many CBOs face when competing for state funds. It provides recommendations on how government entities can improve their contracting and grantmaking processes to make it easier for CBOs to advance heath equity. To best determine HOW we can help, WHI prioritizes understanding the WHY. In this case, why is there a lack of healthcare in developing countries? Lack of medicine, water, and electricity, shortages of doctors, and prohibitive costs all hinder the provision of good-quality healthcare. The World Health Organization estimates that the entire healthcare systems of 22 countries require a complete rebuild. While WHI cannot single-handedly replace the role of a governmental healthcare system, our contribution is significant. We can help the people we work with by providing some of the services they currently need access to. By focusing on communities with the lowest access to resources required for good health and survival, we can make simple, but deliberate changes to communities that dramatically improve the lives of that respective community. WHI is only growing in its goals and efforts toward achieving a world where everyone can receive the same level of access to resources. Greater donations to WHI would increase the number of people we can help and the number of services and products we add and subsequently provide, improving the lives of today's underserved and securing a better future for the next generation.

Next Stage’s multi-year partnership with Constellation Quality Health has been wide-ranging - strategic planning, the launch of a Center of Innovation, the design of a fellowship program, talent search, and the development of this approach to grantmaking by the organization’s associated philanthropic institution - the CCME Foundation. At a time when increased understanding of the social drivers of health is disrupting the status quo for countless health-related institutions, the CCME Foundation is pioneering new ways of identifying and supporting “promising practices” that have demonstrated potential in small-scale application. It is an approach to exploring the nexus of health innovation and philanthropy that is sorely missing for so many community-based organizations.
