Great to see so much going on in maritime decarbonisation with innovative technologies like rotor sails, wing sails and kites harnessing the natural power of the wind, reducing fuel consumption and cutting down on harmful emissions. While the benefits are clear to those in the industry, including my colleagues at Houlder Limited, it’s worth reminding ourselves why it matters: - Eco-Friendly: Wind propulsion significantly lowers carbon footprints, helping the industry meet stringent environmental regulations. - Cost-Effective: By reducing fuel usage, shipping companies can save on operational costs, making it a win-win for the planet and the bottom line. - Proven Technology: With successful trials and implementations on various ships, wind propulsion is no longer just a concept—it’s a reality. - The wind is set to play an increasingly significant role in the future of maritime transport. I look forward to being part of that!

Retrofitting vessels will be key to achieve climate targets. Today, the SYNERGETICS project is in the spotlight as part of our social media campaign "Meet the Projects". Horizon Europe and the Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport are key funding tools to enhance Technology Leadership in the WaterborneTP sector. Within the scope of Innovation Action SYNERGETICS, hydrogen dual-fuel engines are demonstrated on a crew transfer vessel, while methanol-based propulsion is intended for a chemical tanker. The feasibility of full electric propulsion based on swappable battery packs is verified on a container vessel, while electrification of the main propulsion system is evaluated on a cement carrier. Additionally, power management systems for vessels with hydrogen fuel cells are being developed. Hydrodynamic improvements are demonstrated on a dry cargo inland vessel. The Catalogue of technical solutions for decarbonisation, the Handbook for vessel owners and the Scenarios for policy-makers will accelerate the transition towards greener operations.
