My father is a fortune teller and feng shui master. In Chinese fortune-telling, there are no crystal balls. Instead, my father charts the stars, reads the seasons, and weaves meaning from the invisible threads that connect us to time and destiny. Growing up, I watched him at work, fascinated by how he would take someone's birth hour and place, and overlay it with the shifting astrological weather, the rhythms of luck, and the dilemmas of the person sitting across from him. Piece by piece, he would put together a story of the person in front of him—past events, relationships, and choices that make them who they are. Then he would thoughtfully map out their future—not a rigid one, but one filled with paths, choices, and possibilities. One day, he told me about a client whose fortune hinted at a high chance of death by drowning. I was horrified. "What did you tell him?" I asked. "I told him to be alert and mindful around water," my dad said. "That's it? You didn’t warn him? Offer him a feng shui consultation to prevent the disaster?" He shook his head, serious. “No. You don’t tell someone they might drown. Words plant fear, and fear can make people give up when they should fight. If he ever finds himself in danger, I’d want him to swim with all his strength—not sink under the weight of a story I told him.” I was stunned. “But if he’s really in danger, shouldn’t you do more?” My father sighed.
