Australian youth-focused fashion retailer Universal Store Holdings (ASX: UNI) delivered a strong update on its performance in the first 17 weeks of the current financial year, headlined by a 19.3% jump in direct-to-consumer sales when compared with the same time last year. 👖 Sales in the company’s Universal Store brand increased by 15.5% from twelve months prior, with strong growth across both women’s and men’s categories 👟 Sales in the Perfect Stanger brand rocketed by 111% year-on-year on the back of an expanding customer base 🧢 Three new stores opened in FY25 so far, with between 9 and 15 more stores on track for opening in the remainder of the financial year “We’re pleased with the start of FY25 which has seen strong sales growth while maintaining the robust gross margins achieved in H2 FY24. Here are some interesting stories from the world of retail for Thursday, January 30: 👖 Levi Strauss & Co. has issued dismal guidance for its current fiscal year, as it grapples with unfavorable currency exchange rates, one fewer selling week, and a loss in revenue from its Denizen and footwear businesses. ✂️ Amazon is laying off dozens of employees in its communications and corporate responsibility department, which includes its sustainability team. This comes after Amazon cut 200 people from its stores division. 👙 Victoria's Secret has appointed Scott Sekella as CFO, succeeding Tim Johnson, who is retiring in June. Sekella was most recently CFO of crafts retailer Joann and has done stints at Under Armour. 🛋️ IKEA plans to expand its peer-to-peer marketplace for second-hand furniture across Europe following successful pilots in Madrid and Oslo. In a couple of years, it plans to reach all markets across Europe. 🛹 VF Corporation's stock moved into the red after posting a healthy gain earlier in the session on Wednesday, as the apparel and footwear maker’s results weren’t strong enough for the stock to sustain its rally. 👜 LVMH posted revenues of €84.68 ($88.27bn) for 2024, exceeding the €84.38bn forecast by LSEG analysts and equating to organic growth of 1% versus the previous year. 🧘🏻♀️ Alo Yoga is bringing Roblox closer to stores by adding a sticker to locations users can scan to unlock digital wearables in the game. All locations will display a window sticker powered by near-field communication tech. 🎓 Macy's is ending a program that provided college degree programs and other educational courses to its employees at no cost. The program was a partnership with Guild, an educational platform. 🏥 Advocate Health Care is closing all 47 of the clinics it operates inside Walgreens stores in Illinois, the health system announced Wednesday. The clinics will close on February 6th. 📉 US consumer confidence declined for the second consecutive month, with The Conference Board reporting a drop in its consumer confidence index to 104.1 from 109.5 in December. 📊 Federal Reserve officials decided on Wednesday to hold interest rates steady as uncertainty over Donald Trump’s impact on the US economy looms, and inflation remains above the central bank’s target levels. 🚔 Retail crime in the UK has reached unprecedented levels, with over 2,000 daily incidents reported in the year to April 2024, a significant increase from 1,300 the previous year. ☕️ Starbucks is set to eliminate a significant number of drinks and food options in the coming months as part of the company’s plan to simplify its offerings, reduce wait times, and improve its customer experience. 🌶️ Shares of Brinker International hit an all-time high after diners swarmed its Chili's chain in the last three months of 2024 for meal deals, boosting sales and profits.
