Today, I want to highlight Authentic Leadership, a style that profoundly impacted me, which I learned from an ex-boss about 8 years ago when he hired me. I asked him during the job interview "what leadership style do you bring?" He said without a blink of an eye "Authentic Leadership". Back then, I knew little about Authentic Leadership. In Asia, where I work, leaders are often results-oriented, and focused on driving change and innovation. **Authentic Leadership** stands out for its emphasis on genuineness, transparency, and self-awareness. Here are its key characteristics and principles: 1. **#Self-#Awareness**: Authentic leaders deeply understand their values, emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. This self-awareness guides their actions, ensuring alignment with their beliefs and principles. 2. **#Transparency**: They are open and honest in their interactions, sharing their thoughts, decisions, and reasoning openly. Yesterday, we wrapped up our final “Welcome to Our People Leaders” session of 2024, and what an inspiring close it was. Not to worry—the workshop is getting a refresh and will return in 2025 with more energy than the London New Year’s fireworks! We had the privilege of hearing from two senior leaders who shared their authentic leadership journeys with us, each offering invaluable lessons that felt surprisingly aligned—proof that genuine leadership values resonate deeply, even without coordination. One of the most profound insights we gained was a reminder of how essential human connection is in leadership. From Simon Sinek in Leaders Eat Last, “It is not about being in charge; it’s about taking care of those in your charge.” Somewhere along the way, we may have lost a bit of that human touch, but building strong relationships is crucial for effective leadership. Entering a new role brings a mix of excitement and nerves, but our first task as leaders is to establish connections with our teams. We don’t need to be best friends with everyone, but respect and civility lay a foundation for trust. Relationships are the bedrock upon which everything else is built. Another key takeaway was the importance of embracing our strengths while acknowledging areas where we may need support. There’s courage in vulnerability. When we’re honest about the things we find challenging, we open the door to learning from those around us. Let’s remember, leadership isn’t about being the expert in everything. Instead, it’s about drawing on the strengths within our teams and allowing others to shine. Pursue what you enjoy, but don’t hesitate to stretch beyond your comfort zone and when you do, lean on the relationships you’ve nurtured to keep your energy up and your confidence strong. Leadership, we learned, isn’t just about delivering results but about facilitating others’ success. As you rise through the ranks, the focus shifts from being on the ground to providing the guidance and support others need to excel. Leaders influence like the weather; our mood and presence can shape the atmosphere around us. While it’s okay to have off days, let your team in on where you’re at, even if that means saying, “I need a moment to process this.” Just as we extend patience and understanding to our team members, we must allow ourselves the same grace. Creating a safe environment for open communication is key. If people fear retribution for mistakes, you’re likely to hear only the good news and no organization can thrive on half-truths. The culture of any organization stems from the quality of conversations and the integrity with which they’re led. Good leaders know when to celebrate successes and when to address challenges honestly. Missteps are natural; they’re learning moments, not failures. Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Keep pushing forward to become the leader you aspire to be, and remember—every day is an opportunity to shape your legacy and lead with purpose.

Reflections on Leadership: Facing and Overcoming the Biggest Challenge as a CEO In the journey of leadership, challenges are inevitable. They test our resilience, shape our decision-making skills, and ultimately define our leadership style. Its worth reflecting and sharing our reflections on the biggest challenges we have faced as a leaders and CEO and the invaluable lessons these challenges taught. My hope is that by sharing, others might find encouragement and insights for their own leadership paths. Identifying the Challenge: For many, the most daunting challenge occurs when a company faces a significant market downturn that threatens the core business. The rapid change in market conditions is a true test of adaptability and leadership's ability to muster immediate strategic response. 1. Swift Decision-Making: The first lesson is often the importance of swift, informed decision-making. Leadership has to quickly reassess our business model and make tough decisions about resource allocation, cost-cutting, and exploring new market opportunities. These periods can be instructive and often teach delaying difficult decisions often compounds the problem. 2. Leading with Transparency: During challenging time, it is commonly reported that transparency with your team is crucial. Successful transformations occur when communication is open about the challenges the organization is facing, the potential impacts on operations, and the steps being taken to mitigate risks. Transparency helps maintain trust and morale within the team during uncertain times. 3. Embracing Innovation: To navigate out of downturn, it is essential to innovate.
