"There really shouldn't be a need for a Women In Manufacturing Conference in 2024. Let's challenge ourselves and make sure there isn't a need by 2028." Great opening line kicking off this years #WIM2024 conference But where to start.... Today the team at University of Cambridge, IfM Engage, Women In Manufacturing launches this years report on Women in UK Manufacturing 2024: Addressing labour shortages and bridging the gender gap. It's a disappointing fact to hear that the UK still ranks last behind other leading manufacturing nations in terms of participation of women in manufacturing. With significant decline occuring more in the 30s and an increasing pay gap. The report is a review of best practices for diversity and inclusion. And provides suggested actions, best practise, other guiding documents frameworks and toolkits to exploit to allow organisations to create own tailored pledge to share and inspire others to drive positive change. The report provides some great case studies of best practise and a framework which includes 5 key steps. ✅️Commitment from leadership 📝EDI assessment 🎯Participatory vision and targets Initiatives and engagements ⏳️Monitor, report and review Further details on the conference below which you can join online today. https://lnkd.in/eFWTEUGR Link to report to follow. #UKmfg #manufacturingUK High Value Manufacturing Catapult Innovate UK Innovate UK Business Connect MTC - Manufacturing Technology Centre

Whenever I mention that about 20% of Singapore's GDP is from Manufacturing Sector, I am always asked the following questions. 1. Given that Singapore is very expensive, why do companies want to manufacture in Singapore? 2. Do I foresee whether Singapore will continue to be global manufacturing hub in the future? The answer to both questions is as follows. It all depends on the nature of manufacturing. Given its high cost of manpower, logic should suggest that Singapore should not be able to sustain a huge manufacturing sector. However, if the cost of Real Estate and People is significantly lower than the overall cost of the product, then Singapore is an ideal place for manufacturing. This means, the nature of such a manufacturing sector is Capital and Technology intensive. This will also mean that the manufacturing process is highly automated and require minimum manual interaction or intervention. Any company thinking of establishing a manufacturing facility in Singapore or any company is currently struggling with high cost of manufacturing given the rising people and real estate cost, should adopt I4.0 (Industry 4.0) to mitigate the high cost structure. At SPRK International, we advise our clients on how they can adopt I4.0 in their manufacturing process. Our Principal Consultant Steve Connor, will make an assessment and advise how they can weave I4.0 strategies into their existing manufacturing process. SPRK International, we also help to get grants from the government agencies to fund the I4.0 initiatives. I had the privilege of attending the Changing Perceptions conference, organised by Women in Manufacturing at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry last Thursday. It was nothing short of inspiring! The room was filled with industry leaders, all driven to break barriers and reimagine the future of manufacturing. From powerful workshops on diverse roles, overcoming imposter syndrome, and leveraging digital technology to shaping the future of manufacturing jobs, the event sparked vital conversations on how we can create more inclusive spaces and opportunities for women in the industry. One message resonated deeply: women belong in manufacturing—not as the exception, but as leaders, innovators, and changemakers. The under-representation of women in this sector is a challenge we must meet head-on by raising awareness, mentoring future talent, and transforming the narrative around manufacturing careers. The time for change is now. Let’s lift each other up and continue driving progress toward a more diverse, inclusive, and dynamic industry. Today, our CEO, Dr Ruby Pillai had the opportunity to attend the Women in Manufacturing: Changing Perceptions event at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry. As the manufacturing industry navigates challenges like digitisation, skills shortages, and the drive towards net-zero, the increasing role of women is not only timely but crucial. Diversity and inclusion are more than ethical principles—they are key to driving innovation and business success. Let’s work together to build a more inclusive, sustainable future for manufacturing. iWarranty Juan Crosby Wojciech Szejerka Kacper Senecki Tolu Oluwagbemi John Hartley Glyn Pritchard-Jones #WomenInManufacturing #DiversityMatters #InclusiveFuture #NetZero

6moI would assume the further decline which happens when women reach their 30s is when family and children come along. I do think it's only now (slight exaggeration, I know), they're installing female toilets on site. Not surprised with the ranking, which is fascinating because when I started out in manufacturing the UK was way ahead, I suspect working conditions AND unplugged embracing of real diversity has made the difference in Europe.
