Here’s a quick overview of the referral process: Step One: Call (818) 538-5880 to connect with the FeldCare team, or send the in-home outpatient referral via fax at (818) 616-6676, and we will check your patient’s eligibility. Step Two: Once billing knows a patient is eligible, the doctor’s order and consent form is obtained. Step Three: An OT, PT, or SLP utilizing the FeldCare Direct network will connect with the patient referral. From here, the therapist will begin the plan of care. Here’s a data-driven analysis of where we stand: 1️⃣ How Many PTs Do We Need? 🔍 Current Evidence suggests that, in civilian settings, approximately 9.5 physical therapists are necessary for every 10,000 people (APTA Workforce Analysis, 2020). In specialized populations, such as the military, this number may be higher due to increased injury risk and comprehensive service requirements (Warontherocks). 2️⃣ Licensed vs. Practicing PTs 💼 The APTA reported that as of 2019, there were 312,716 licensed PTs in the U.S. (APTA, 2020). 👩⚕️ Of these, about 225,350 were actively employed in 2022 (BLS). This indicates that around 87,366 PTs are potentially engaged in non-clinical roles, such as research, education, administration, or have retired. 3️⃣ The Non-Clinical Trend 📈 PTs transitioning to non-clinical roles is an evolving trend. Many physical therapists choose careers in education, consulting, research, or sales. Resources like The Non-Clinical PT highlight how these alternative paths are expanding. 📊 What Does This Mean for Patient Care? 👉 If approximately 9.5 PTs are needed per 10,000 people, the U.S. should maintain a balance that supports the population adequately. With the current active clinical workforce at 225,350, we need to ensure that this aligns with the U.S. population's needs. This may be against the grain, I want to emphasize the utmost importance of evaluations for outpatient physical therapists. Our ability to assess and diagnose accurately is our highest value and sets the foundation for effective treatment plans and outcomes. Prioritizing evaluations ensures that we understand each patient's unique needs and can tailor our approach accordingly. Yes, I practice what I preach, I have no limits on the number of new patients I see. If I could see 12 a day, I would. Limiting ourselves from seeing new patients not only hinders our growth but also denies individuals access to the care they need. By embracing new patients, we expand our reach and contribute to the well-being of our community. In essence, our highest skill level lies in our ability to evaluate and provide comprehensive care plans. In addition to evaluations, optimizing schedule utilization is crucial. By efficiently managing our schedules, we can accommodate both new and existing patients without compromising quality of care. This includes triaging patients based on urgency, importance and ensuring timely completion of treatment plans. 🚨 Outpatient PT clinics are struggling to fill positions. 📉 Vacancy rate: 9.5%—nearly double the national average (4.8%). 📈 Job openings grew 1% overall from 2023 to 2024: 🔹 PTs: +3.2% 🔹 PTAs: +17.2% ❗ 13% of all PT/PTA roles remain unfilled.
