On 18th November 2024, the concluding session of the 14th CII National Higher Education Summit, titled "Fostering an Ecosystem for Quality Research, Faculty Development and Innovation in Higher Education," explored strategies to align academic research with industry needs and build robust innovation ecosystems. This is excellent news and makes me proud as an alumnus of this esteemed institute. I would like to share my personal view on what makes SPJIMR SP Jain Institute of Management & Research unique, irrespective of rankings. I vividly remember when I had started applying for SPJIMR back in 2018. And in an instant, I could notice that it was different. While the form had the usual fields for education, work experiences, it also had a part B that asked questions like: 1. My biggest achievement at work 2. How did I resolve conflict with my manager? 3. What is one memory in my life that is close to my heart? 4. What was one moment where I went above and beyond? 5. Mention an incident where you helped out another person Essentially, this form also assesses a candidate based on their human values in addition to their educational and work achievements, giving a holistic profile, who get shortlisted for SPJIMR's unique profile-based calls. Even during the interviews, you are asked questions that test your empathetic skills, social sensitivity, ethical inclinations and overall psychological profile in addition to the usual management principles. There is no right answer here, but the approach on getting to the answer is where you get evaluated against SPJIMR values and culture. Throughout my time at the campus, these values have been reflected at every step. From my experience, empathy, social sensitivity and innovation are core values that are inculcated through various aspects of the program, whether it's the world-class design thinking course, which puts us into the user's perspective or the 4-day Personal Growth Lab (that was critical to our development) or Development of Corporate Citizenship, where we build social sensitivity. It's a carefully curated curriculum that not only grows the manager in us, but also the human being. And while not every course added value, it did move the needle a little bit in the right direction, enough to make an impact down the line! #SPJIMR

From getting booed on stage to beating the likes of Stanford in competition, this is how I overcame rejection. When I was in Business school, I was given a chance to speak for the Student President campaign. The college auditorium was packed, & halfway through my speech, the crowd erupted, not in applause but in laughter, & I was kicked off the stage. Though this wasn’t the first rejection, I was rejected many times, even during campus placements, & every rejection chipped away at my confidence. For a kid from a small town with broken English, the world felt like a stage where I didn’t belong. But then, IIM Calcutta happened, & it was here that I found my tribe & confidence. I found people who believed in me even when I didn’t. We made a commitment to become the best case competition team on campus. It was very tough, but with the practice & guidance from our seniors, we won our first competition. And we didn’t stop there; after that, we won 3 more. We also represented India at a global stage, competing against Stanford, & the world’s best came in 2nd globally. That moment taught me that ‘You can rise above rejection if you find the right people to stand with you.’ When you find the people who believe in you, stand by you,& push you forward, you can rise above any setback. We were the nation's best-case competition team after facing a lot of rejections in the beginning. So, one thing is very clear: there’s no glass ceiling too high & no dream too far when you have your tribe by your side. Who are the people who believed in you when no one else did? Besides my parents, I have grown up under the shade of my grandparents, uncle and aunt. Living in a joint family right from childhood has instilled in me a strong sense of unity. Throughout my high school, I put in sincere efforts and formed a habit of being consistent. Moreover, I am a very agile and versatile individual. My journey of getting into IMT goes back to 2022. I made my first attempt at CAT in 2022. I secured 92 percentile in that. However, instead of taking admission the same year, I thought of giving it again next year. I worked pretty hard for my second attempt and I was confident of securing a good percentile. Then came the day, 26 November, 2023. What boosted my confidence more was that coincidentally that was my birthday too! The moment I left the examination hall, I knew I was not getting anywhere through CAT. But, I did not give up, I prepared for XAT and then came the result. I secured a 97 percentile in XAT, which gave me a sense of relief. Post that, came the IMT interview. After my interview, I was so sure that I would not getting into IMT Ghaziabad but when I saw the result, I was surprised to be accepted. Being hosted by ISB last month was a true highlight. It was a treat to visit one of the greenest and most happening business school campuses in India. Some favorite memories from the trip (in no particular order) include -A gorgeous sunrise -A campus tour ( loved learning more about I-Venture @ ISB) - Meeting with Adcom, Operations team and the Deputy Dean - searching for porcupines - chasing preening peacocks for photos - meeting with excited current students - visiting the lovely library and - the wonderful hospitality of the team and -not to mention, the company of my fellow AIGAC members. We asked Adcom what they thought applicants should know better about Indian School of Business. 1️⃣ Don't assume that you may not fit in because of a bad GPA or a GMAT score or not belonging to a certain mold. The evaluation is truly holistic. Like many of the top Business Schools around the world, they strive for more diversity. 2️⃣ It is truly a school with a "One ISB, Two campuses" approach. For example, recruiters do not know which campus an ISB student went to. Classes are equally sought after in both places. In fact, you should watch a video. (I will link it once you guess the campus). 3️⃣ I am saving the best for the last. This advice is from a seasoned veteran. If you want to go to Business School, show that you care about the world of business. The best way to do that is to go beyond your role at work and to explore initiatives for the community. The trip also confirmed this for me. 🧳Visit the campus if you can. It gives a complete picture of what the MBA program can do for you. P. S. What has been a most memorable trip you took recently? P.
